Do I have a decent shot at U of Michigan?

My grades are not great, my standardized tests scores are not great (will take them again in the fall), I have pretty decent extra-curricular activities, do I have a decent shot?

P.S. These are not the only schools I am applying to. I am still deciding and will make more decisions towards the middle of summer.

the trumpet is your only ec that is REALLY consistant throughout highschool, but you have alot of them, which sets you apart.
your gpa is pretty good, i think umich is a bit of a reach but you do have alot of ecs, how were your standardized tets..
also, for duke, id say youd need to be pretty athletic, honestly.
i dont know the deal with your cali schools, but id say you probably have a good shot, i just dont know their stats and what they are looking for.
i hope this was helpful..

The only thing is your GPA is probably little low for Michigan. But what are your test scores and what types of classes have you been taking (because that definitely makes a difference).

Your EC’s are good, though.

You’re not getting into Michigan out-of-state with a 3.3 GPA. Michigan does look at test scores, and an amazing score (2200+ SAT) could off-set the GPA, but it is a GPA first school and there are kids being rejected in the 3.6-3.8 range. 53% of the admitted students had a 3.9 GPA or higher. 75% had a 3.7 or higher.

Duke is even more of a pipe dream. Only 21% of UC Davis students who were accepted had below a 3.5. Only 4% of UC San Diego students accepted had below a 3.5. UCSC is a solid match school with your GPA.

For all of you who are asking for my test scores, here they are:
Math - 540
Critical Reading - 560
Writing - 610
Total: 1710

I haven’t taken the subject tests but I will most likely take Korean and Math IIC, which I have done very well on in previous practice tests. (700-770)

As for the SAT I Reasoning Test, I’m waiting on the results of my ACT test to decide which one I will really study for and take. The 1710 was without any preparation.

I was wondering if auditioning for the marching band would help my chances of getting in?

And as for my transcript of classes, here they are:

As you guys can see, I did really terribly my freshman and sophomore year. But if you look closer, you see I gave a consistent effort to do better my junior year. I’m hoping colleges will also see that I went from getting C’s in Algebra 1-2, to getting A’s in I.A.T. I’m also challenging myself by taking Pre-Calculus over the course of 6 weeks, which is starting to be really hard for me. I don’t know if you guys can see any correlation between my EC’s, but I’ve tried to really narrow it down to medical E.C.'s, because medicine is my ultimate goal. Thanks a lot for helping me out.

BTW Does Michigan calculate 9-12 weighted? Or just 10-12 weighted?

Michigan doesn’t have any weighted scale. They take your grades, without pluses and minuses, for the sophomore and junior years without elective courses (Band and Business/Money wouldn’t count). Michigan would look at your GPA as a 3.28.

With test scores and GPA both well below their 25% mark of accepted students, it’s VERY unlikely you would gain admittance. They’re looking for kids with a 3.7+ and a 1300+ SAT. With a 3.28 and a 1100, it’s not likely you’re going to get in. 92% of Michigan admits were in the top 10% of their HS class.

That said there are tons of other schools that are similar to Michigan that have a bit lower admissions standards. In the Big Ten, Michigan State, Indiana, Iowa all have relatively low admissions standards but all are located in great college towns and offer terrific academics in many departments. All are recommended if you are looking for great schools similar to Michigan but with easier admissions.

I’m not an expert on the UC system, but from the looks at stats the UCs are very concerned about class rank and being in the top 10%. You’re outside of that being at 50%. UCSC, UCD, UCSB and UCI are all schools where your test scores work but the GPA and rank is low, and that is the primary thing they’ll be looking at.

You really need to re-evaluate your list of schools. I see nothing that even closely resembles a safety school, and I don’t even see a match school at this point (UCSC is a reach with the grades and rank).

i’d like to get more than one evaluation please =)
/bump

sorry, but i have a 4.2 (3.9ish michigan gpa, only had one B+ in a history) and a 1390 SAT and i am worried about me getting in OOS.

so probably not.

apply to Michigan as early as you can … i.e September

I’m sorry, you’re probably not going to get into Michigan. You might have a slight chance in September, but I know a lot of people who have applied with higher stats than yours that haven’t gotten in, and as you can see from my location, I’m in state. And I’m sure some of those people didn’t get in for other reasons, but I just don’t think it’s realistic.

I really hate to be like this, too. If you do apply and happen to get in, you can rub it in my face. Like I said in my first reply, your EC’s were good. But that’s really just not going to be enough.

I don’t know anything about the UC’s. But from what other people are saying, it sounds like you need to look a little bit more.

I really am sorry.

U Mich admits on a rolling basis, so MAYBE you have a chance in September. But I’m sorry-- your stats and GPA are pretty low for them. What’s your prospective major?
Duke is an unrealistic high reach. Top students get rejected from there each year. Your GPA is mediocre at best, and your ECs seem scattered.
UCSD is getting more and more competitive each year, and again, the best students are beginning to struggle to get admitted. Even though you’re in-state, you have a low chance for admission.
UCSC is a match. UC Davis is a high match. I suggest you go onto the UC website and calculate your UC eligibility. If you’re eligible, then you automatically are admitted to one UC campus (not of your choice though).
I’m sorry to sound so harsh, but I really think you should re-evaluate your list of schools. Add more realistic matches and safeties.
Good luck, and I agree with srgirl6-- if you prove us wrong, you get my sincere congratulations and the permission to rub it in my face. Hope you have a good admissions experience!

Your UMich GPA would be a 3.4. Which is unlikely for even IS. I’m sorry, but I don’t think you can get in. Try applying FIRST thing in September and maybe… I don’t know about the others though.

Good luck though!!

The UM GPA is not a 3.4, the UM GPA is taken from your English, Math, Science, Social Science, and Foreign Language courses during your sophomore and junior year. You eliminate +/- grades, giving a 4.0 to an A+, A, A-; a 3.0 to a B+, B, B-, etc. If you do that, it’s a 3.28.
