do i have a good chance for tech?

GPA
W-4.041 UW-3.7

but my W GPA after freshman year was 3.3, so improved it by almost .8 and my UW without freshman year would be a 3.96.

SAT scores

Math:670
CR:580
Writing: 540, 8

NHS, Beta Club, tri-captian of Varsity Tennis

AP: French,Calc BC, Chem, Physics B

Your GPA is fine, but your test scores are very low. Tech is a reach.

If you are in-state you should be fine, but as G.P.Burdell said your test scores are a bit low. Your math is in range, but the lower 25% of accepted applicants scored atleast a 600 in critical reading and 590 in writing. So try to get those two up, or try the ACT (27-31 is their range). Otherwise you seem like a solid candidate.

im in state, and a girl… so i hope that helps

Tech does not have different admissions standards for in-state students.

Tech accepts over 1/2 of its applicants, and being an instate girl is a bonus, but agreed, those scores are a bit low. If you are not a senior, retake.

“Being a girl is a bonus”

My understanding is that when the courts ruled no affirmative action it included boys and Georgia and girls at Tech. I did understand that, in the old model, girls could have lower math scores but it was because the scorre difference produced equivalent GPAs in math courses.

your scores are low…but if you have some nice volunteering and leadership positions…you stand a decent shot. my friend who was actively involved in the band (section leader, band captain ect.) got in with a 1730 SAT score…so dont let that score determine where you go

if I get an A in AP chem, Physics B( I wanted to take Physics C but it was the same time as AP chem, i got a 103), and AP Calculus BC, will that up my chances a little?

It can’t hurt.

granny,
Several schools are openly acknowledging that they are looking at the stats of males and females differently. I was a great article yesterday (am still looking for it) but also saw this one [The Answer Sheet - Gender and College Admissions: William and Mary Dean Talks Back](http://voices.washingtonpost.com/answer-sheet/equity/gender-and-college-admissions.html#)

No difference (at Tech), actually the male acceptance rate was slightly higher than the female acceptance rate last year - 61.3% v 60.1%. This is presumably due to slightly stronger academic profiles for males than females that apply to Tech, as GT would like nothing more than to improve the “ratio.”

I’d say a good shot. You should try to push 2100 at least, though. 700’s on everything isn’t too hard to get; math shouldn’t be too tough, though the others may require a bit of studying.

i have taken the SAT 4 times, and cant get above 680 on the math( probably due to careless errors). This semester i got a 97 in first semester BC calc, a 95 in AP chemistry, and 103 in AP physics B, but an 88 in honors world lit. I wish it was that easy for me to get 700’s on everything, but obviously not. my top SAT score now is an 1840(1260 CR and math).

I don’t think it’s “easy” to get 700s on everything either; I took it three times and my math never went above 650, despite buttloads of studying. So don’t worry; you’re not alone! Awesome midyear grades should definitely help, though! :)

hey, would anyone have any suggestions for my additional information essay for deferred applicants. Tech wants to know why I feel it is a good fit for me. I really want to go tech because I have a passion for calculus, chemistry, and physics. And I love feeling challenged in those areas and eventually finding the answer. I just dont know where to start with this essay.

start by talking about the love you have for science and what attracts you to it. Then, you can finalize by evoking how you think GaTech is the right school for you to achieve your goals.

thanks for your suggestion, Im trying to include a lot of that in my essay

Wow your school grades aren’t reflected at all in your SAT. I guess you work hard or your school is really easy.

I think as a girl, you have a great pull and seeing you are in state, you will most likely be accepted unless your essay kind of reinforces your SAT scores…

I would add in a third part:

 1. Why you have a passion for calculus, chemistry, and physics
 2. Why Tech is the place to help you foster that passion and grow (vs. UGA or Southern Poly or Florida or any other school).
 3. What you bring to the table, and why Tech should admit you.

Many people forget that last part - Tech wants to admit students that will improve it. That means either bringing up the SAT/GPA average, increasing campus diversity, admitting dedicated researchers that will work hard, etc.
