Do I have a realistic shot at a full tuition/full ride scholarship?

@SJNccc, if you apply to Alabama (University of), apply early and to the Honors College and then consider applying for their Computer-Based Honors Program. That’s a very competitive, elite program, but you sound like an excellent candidate. Students admitted to CBH are rockstars and do VERY well post-graduation.

Also, with all you CC credits, you may be able to complete a master’s degree in four years, which would be covered by the Presidential Scholarship (full tuition).

@LucieTheLakie, the CBHP sounds interesting. Is the program appropriate for students who are not going to major or minor in computer related field?

@4beardolls, I don’t believe it has anything to do with being in a computer-related field. The name is rather confusing, and I think a lot of potential applicants may pass on it for that reason. I think it’s really intended for those who have experience doing research and/or are interested in pursuing undergraduate research.

From the page I linked to:

@Mom2aphysicsgeek’s son is in the program as is @beth’s mom, I believe. Perhaps they can provide some additional information for you.

Sorry, that should have read “@beth’s mom’s daughter.”

Ohio State gives out 300-350 Morrill Scholarships each year. These are 4 year, full-tuition scholarships. Last year’s prompt was “based on your own knowledge, awareness, and experience, in what ways is diversity important to your personal, academic, or career goals and how have you successfully leveraged, enhanced, and promoted diversity and other cross-cultural relationships among your peers and non-peers.” If your experiences/leadership/community service could be a fit, apply with a passionate, thougtful essay. There are several posts on the College Confidential Ohio State page about the Morrill Scholarship - you can search to learn more.

@LucieTheLakie
That seems very interesting, thank you for sharing this opportunity. Do you know if they will accept all (or the majority) of my CC credits?

@momfactfinder
Thank you for suggesting this scholarship. Do you know if the prompt is the same every year?

@SJNccc, you’d be best served by checking with the university itself as I have no direct knowledge. I will say, however, that I’ve never seen a university with more generous AP/CLEP credits.

I think if you pose that question in the Bama forums, someone will be able to answer the specific question:

I’m not sure, but I believe it has been the same or very similar for the past few years. Wouldn’t hurt to call the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and ask.

You may want to look into Univ of Minnesota. They give big scholarships to NMFs both in and out of state. Biological sciences is big there. It is in it’s own college, the College of Biological Sciences. It is one of the most competitive for admissions.

Pitt is definitely a good possibility. You can look through some threads where people give stats and what merit they have received. If you are from a state which is less common there it will probably increase your chances. Their basic app is very simple. Put some time into creating thoughtful answers to the optional short answer questions and apply early.

At the very least, the University of Minnesota would probably waive out of state tuition, so you’d only have to pay in-state tuition.

Since you are so close you should check out UofSC honors college. You might be in range for McNair - check the money matters page and NMF scholarship (Leiber) is automatic $ plus computer on top of anything else you get. Scores likely to get you waived OOS tuition. May not be enough but I know of several kids from NC that picked UofSC over UNC. Again, it’s close enough to be an easy visit.

If your ultimate goal is to go to medical school then don’t waste your time on prestige schools.

Go to a school where you can get a full scholarship and graduate at the top of your class. Small liberal arts colleges are a good choice.

Will make it much easier for you to get into a top med school
