Do I have a shot at Cal? Applying for which major can maximize my chance?

hey guys~ I am an international student attending a state university right now(not in California :( ). I want to apply for Berkeley next fall. here is my stats

Major: CS/Math double major
GPA: 4.0
prerequisite courses: will be able to finish all the prerequisite for EECS next spring.
extracurricular activity: couple of volunteers, ACM member, several personal projects, honor program,
doing math research with a professor this semester, java developer in university

This summer I took 2 classes at Berkeley ( cs61a, multivariable calculus ) and got 2 A+. After that I found I seriously fall in love with that place so I decided to transfer.

The dilemma I am facing is that I can finish all the core requisites and half of the major requisites for EECS but I know engineering school is harder to get in. I can also apply for either Math/CS but I will not be able to finish the foreign language classes required for College of L&S. English is not my first language so do I still have to take foreign language classes? EECS/Math/CS which I should apply for? really appreciate any input!

I think you have an excellent chance of getting admitted. GPA and prereqs are very important, and you seem to have aced it. Your extracurriculars are pretty impressive too.

EECS is a major in the college of engineering, so admittance is more competitive than CS, which is in the College of Letters and Sciences and is a BA degree. Generally, EECS is more math/science oriented than CS at Berkeley.

I don’t know much about Math.

Good luck!

If you’re planning to double major, you’re probably better off going for L&S. Both math and CS are in L&S. CoE has different breadth requirements, which I think would make it harder to double major (I could be wrong, but I think they would make you complete all of both breadth requirements if you did EECS and math.)

On admissions, well, it’ll hurt you that you’re not at a california CC, but your stats are pretty good. Having 61A is definitely a plus since most transfers don’t have that, not sure how the foreign language requirements will affect you.

You should apply to the school you want to do the requirements for, you can find all that online. I think for L&S (where math and CS are) you get admitted as “undeclared” and only need to fill out a major when you apply because of one of the essay questions, btw.

Thanks for the reply! I probably need to call the admission office to figure out whether i need to fulfill the foreign language requirement or not. Last time I called them it took me 25 minutes to get to talk to the actual officer…:frowning: I actually really want to apply for college of L&S since I am also interested in history/literature these sorts of things…and plus their relatively high acceptance rate
Don’t know how much as being an international student (no FA needed) and not in California will affect me.

If your native language is not English, then there are other ways of satisfying the L&S foreign language requirement by taking proficiency tests (SAT subject, AP, IB HL, A-level, or departmental placement test):

[Office of Undergraduate Advising: Foreign Language](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/fl.html)

Also, if you studied in a high school whose primary language of instruction was not English, then ask L&S if completing level 3 or higher of English (as a foreign language) courses at that high school can count.

If you wish to double major in math and CS, doing so in L&S will be easier to manage.
