Do I have a shot at Georgetown?

Hello!

I’m a senior in high school and I’d like to know my chances for getting into Georgetown. I’ll list my GPA, test scores, etc. as well as some background information and hopefully this will give you an idea of who I am as a student and a person. I attended a low-ranking school in the midwest for my first two years and will graduate from a prestigious public school in the Northeast. Let me know if any other info is needed or how I can make this more comprehensive–be as honest as possible!

GPA: 3.1 (I’ll explain!)
SAT: 2250
AP Scores: 5 on AP World, 5 on AP Lit

Awards:
National Latin Exam “Maxima Cum Laude” 3 years in a row.
I’ve won multiple gavels and “best speaker” awards for Junior State of America and Model United Nations.
AP Scholar with distinction

  • I did a cultural program at Princeton University, a Precollege program at NYU and a cultural excursion with a focus on music in Cuba this past summer.
  • I'm getting my recs from my english and history teachers, as well as a supplementary from an NYU professor.
  • I'm fluent in English and Spanish, my mother is Cuban and I'm first generation. I'm also proficient in Latin.
  • I come from a high-income family
  • Mostly honors/AP classes

Extracurriculars:

  • Varsity rowing team since Junior year
  • Director of activism and community engagement for Junior State of America -Club president for Operation Smile
  • Junior captain for Ethics Bowl
  • Symphony orchestra all 4 years
  • JV Captain for Scholastic Bowl (soph year)
  • Volunteer at animal shelter
  • I'm writing my common app essay on growing up in different countries and being biracial and how it's fueled the commitment I have to international diplomacy and public policy Professional experience:
  • Interned at an international company in NYC for the past two summers. It's an organic cleaning and body care company that I found through Operation Smile.

So, as you can tell, I have a pretty low GPA but impressive CV and test scores. It may not seem that impressive from here but I didn’t feel like writing my whole life story…hopefully this gave you an idea. I mainly accredit my poor grades to moving so much. I grew up in six different countries; I move every few years because of my parents’ jobs. Having to readjust all the time and change school systems was a struggle. Moreover, I suffered from severe depression and social anxiety my freshman and sophomore year which really took a toll on my grades. Georgetown is my dream school and I want to major in political science.

Does my low GPA completely ruin my chances?

I think it will hurt your chances a lot, but private schools like Georgetown also care about other factors I think.
It would be very helpful for you to write why your GPA is in that state in the optional essay.

Also, just in case you didn’t already know, Georgetown is not on the common application; they have their own process.

As a student at a high school outside the US, I would strongly advise against writing your essay on growing up in two countries. My GC’s first words when I brought that up as a possible essay topic were “Everyone writes the third-culture kid essay.” You’ll be better off writing about something that’s unique to you.

Do you think I’d have a better shot at GWU?
