I applied ED to Penn SEAS
SAT-1810 (530cr, 670m, 610w)
SAT II's- Math I 640, Chem 600 U.S History 610
3.65/4.0 gpa unweighted
4.011/5.o gpa weighted
Rank: 21/493
Rigor is hard taking 2 A.P. classes (school only offers 5)

EC's
3 years Varsity Football (captain, 3 letters)(spend about 20 hours a week on football and i plan to play at Penn if admitted)
5 hours of community service a week for the past 4 years (tutoring children, cleaning up at local church and giving free bagpipe lessons)
4 years in a pipe bank (pipe major, won several state awards and a few international awards)
there are several more EC's but are very insignificant in my mind

my brother currently attends Penn and my interview went great (the guy said he will write me a great recommendation)
My essays were great, and my recommendations were alright.

do i have a shot at Penn even though my academics aren't that great?
do i have a shot at these other schools:
Cornell
UNC chapel Hill
BC
NYU (Stern)
Penn State

Thanks for your help

well you are legacy and applied ED to penn. Major boosts.
However, before I feel I can legitimately chance you…
- What is your ethnicity?
- Were you recruited for football or do you plan to walk-on? (What position do you play?)

Without knowing this information I’d say you actually have around a 25% chance of getting in…Penn rejects around 2/3 of its legacy students, keep that in mind, and unless you were recruited for football you might have a poor shot at getting in. Penn really doesn’t consider taking 2 AP’s rigorous either, usually the top students end up taking between 10-15 APs upon graduation. Unless you happen to be hispanic or African American, you don’t have the greatest shot. However, that said, I wouldn’t be totally surprised if you got in either, so there is hope.

As for your other schools, (unless you have legacy) Cornell engineering seems a far, far reach (unless again you were recruited for football). Penn State, BC seem like good match or slight reach schools. Good luck.

well my ethnicity is Indian and i am a Center/Longsnapper. No school really recruits Longsnappers so i cant say i was recruited(the interviewer tried to recruit me but you can’t count that). I plan to walk on. About the Ap’s my school only offers 5 so there would be no way for me to get 10-15. My brother told me that the SEAS has an acceptance rate of about 20-35% (Dont know where he got these numbers from though)

Hey I am Indian too! Haha, well CAS has the highest acc. rate, so SEAS I would think have lower. I would say being south asian, hurts your chances tremendously. You never know, If your counselor recs were amazing, and if your essays amazing as well, you might have a shot, right now its on the lower end of the scale I would say.
Good luck though!

Really my brother attends CAS and he said CEAS is actually a lot more leniant since not many people apply there. well thanks for your help

I am pretty sure CAS has the second lowest acceptance rate. Siblings do not count as legacy, but it should help nonetheless. And it’s perfectly fine that you didn’t take 10-15 APs. Penn just wants its applicants to maximize on all opportunities offered. If your guidance counselor checked the box “takes most rigorous schedule possible” on your school report, you’re in good shape.

I never chance people because I do not know what my chances are myself, but I just wanted to point a couple of those things out.

I stand corrected. Thanks xs0itgoesx.

thanks for the help

if you’re indian in the asian sense, not the native american sense, you will not get in with an 1810 and a 3.65 UW. and no, siblings aren’t real legacy.

well Penn really doesn’t weigh SAT scores as greatly as you would think. I know a few kids from Penn who got in with 1700-1900’s, but they were athletes and not indian…

even though you are not being officially recruited, maybe they will accept you because they know you will play football for them

thanks for the support =D

your ec are great, the gpa is good, and sat is ok, hope you ge in:) its true not many indians play football haha

ya im the only Indian athlete in my enire county actually. we really arent known for our athletic abilities. im not that bad though, i did letter all 3 years i was playing

wow we indians are only good at cricket jk haha, we only have like 2 indians at our school out like 3000 kids

ive come to the conclusion that being indian sucks…

not really we are smart and we make great bollywood movies and we are great leaders

Bollywood?? is that some sort of indian thing, i really try to be as least indian as i can

bollywood is like hollywood in india.
