What are my chances at the UT-Austin school of communications? My SAT score is fine for the comm school, but since I'm not in the top-10%, it's a little low (about 40 points). Do I have a shot?

If you have good letters of recommendation maybe.

Thanks! I plan on getting recommendations from my journalism adviser, my communication studies teacher, my business teacher, and the public relations director for my school district.

Not to burst your bubble but your credentials look almost identical to mine in high school and I didn’t get into Comm. I’m a freshman this fall and I got into my second-choice major - rhetoric/writing, which is quite close to the same thing as journalism - but I have to go through the application process again to transfer to Comm, which is highly competitive. Honestly, it has a lot to do with the number of people that graduated from the School of Communications - and the specific major you’re applying for - last year because that’s the only number of slots they will fill with incoming students.

Not saying you won’t get in, but Communications is kind of picky so don’t rely on it too much. Make sure you have a good second-choice major to fall back on just in case. You can always apply to transfer like I’m doing.

Good luck and Hook 'em!
