Do I have a shot at UCLA or UCSD?

obviously, my best shot of the two would be ucsd, but i'm also really interested in ucla.

i got 3.33, 3.167 in freshman year. that doesn't really matter since uc's don't count frosh/senior years.

sophmore year i got 3.66 each semester: Eng AS (highest avaliable in our school)- A both times, Spanish 5-6- B both times, Alg 3-4- B both times and Chem 1-2- A both times. my other classes were athletics and an elective history so those don't count on the UCGPA.

right now, in my junior year:

1st Semester-
Bio AP: B
Eng H: A
USHist AP: A
Journalism Adv: A
Physics: A
Pre-Calc: C
4.0 W GPA

Current Second Semester:
Bio AP: A
Eng H: A
USHist AP: A
Journalism Adv: A
Physics: A
Pre-Calc: C
4.167 W GPA

SAT score first try was 1900; will retake in Oct.
Taking SAT II's in June for US Hist and Lit; hopefully around 700 each.

so do i have a shot at UCSD or even an outside shot at UCLA?

that c in math is gonna hurt

yeah i can't seem to do well no matter how hard i try.

pre calc is ruining my life. :(

I believe ucla wants c-less people.

u have a change...they're not terribly hard schools to get into

"I believe ucla wants c-less people."

Not entirely true. Although getting a C is never something to gloat about, I know a person who had three Cs on record and he made it to Cal, UCLA, and NYU. No heart-stopping extracurriculars either.

Aside from GPA, SATs, etc you have to remember that UCLA and UCSD are both public schools and thus have an obligation to offer the majority of their admissions to in-state residents. You should calculate your chances depending on where you live, the competitive level of your high school, and the stats of your peers who are also interested in attending said universities.

UCSD is pure numbers. That C might hurt you, you may not be able to get into an impacted major, and you might not get into the college of your choice...but I think you'll have a decent shot.

:)

i have a shot at changing that c to a b in the second semester; i'll try my hardest to do so.

anyway, thanks for your responses.

additional feedback is always appreciated.

are u in-state?

The Brian:

Assuming you are a California resident,
UCLA: Reach
UCSD: Slight Reach

ucsd is pure numbers, but the numbers are NOT based just on grades. ucsd relies on a formula that adds in scores, grades, ec's, and life challenges. See http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/education/20051218-9999-1m18ucsd.html for a description

True, but it's the major component.

You should be fine...Couple C's won't hurt you. Concentrate on doing well on your SAT I and SAT II tests.

yes, i am in state.

thanks for the responses.

while C's are ok, you definitely can't have too many if u want LA or Berk; i had 3 C's in sophomore year and i didn't get into either of them..my GPA seems to be about the same as yours but my SATs are higher. i think u have a shot at ucsd for sure, but LA is kind of a reach..but all you can do is try your best to raise ur grades/sats so good luck!
