Applying to the Social Sciences School for International Relations

C’mon guys, Anyone?

Seriously? Nobody?

I’m not the best source since I’m only a senior applying to H&SS as well, but I can give you my opinion.

The mean GPA for H&SS as of this year is a 3.62, and you’re just about there. The middle 50% for critical reading SAT is 660-750, and you’re in that range with a good score. The middle 50% for math is 670-770. You’re not quite there, but you’re just shy of it and I don’t think that will break you if they like the rest of your credentials. Also, keep in mind that roughly 25% of H&SS students have math SAT scores lower than 670.

I noticed that you didn’t post your writing SAT score. Carnegie Mellon does consider the writing section of the SAT.

You have a varied list of extracurricular activities. When I visited CMU over the summer, they said that they prefer a well-lopsided student to a well-rounded student because it shows that they are passionate about what they do. However, I think that you have that element because while you are involved in many extracurricular activities, they have similar themes running through them- international relations, sports, and service. You’ve managed to tie those interests together nicely. Something interesting that I learned about CMU is that their hierarchy of factors in an application (not including the essay) is GPA-Extracurriculars-SAT. They are more interested in how you’ve been spending 4 years of your life than what you can produce in a couple of hours in a testing room, and extracurriculars are a strong point for you.

A lot of it also comes down to the essay. For me, Carnegie Mellon is undoubtedly my first choice, so it was pretty easy for me to write the Why CMU essay because it came naturally. I know why I want to be there. You have to tap into that and express, in an honest way, why you want to go to Carnegie Mellon. An admissions representative for CMU at a local presentation I attended said that a lot of applicants discuss their preference for a major in depth, but not their interest in Carnegie Mellon. Avoid that mistake, and you will have a more successful essay that can greatly impact your chances.

All in all, I would say that you have a shot, but Carnegie Mellon is a wildcard for almost anyone. Make sure that you have really followed through and showed passion in the essay; it will impress the admissions committee. Again, I don’t know how reliable I am. I’m in the same boat that you’re in. But I’ve done a lot of research on CMU and felt like you deserved an answer, so there’s my shpiel. Best of luck.

^ Wow. That was definitely worth the wait. Thanks for your answer, really really helped. Where did you get that information about the order of precedence?

My W score is the weakest part I guess, it’s a 590.

I live in Florida and they did a presentation in Boca, so I went. That’s where one of the admissions reps talked about the order. That was the order they were presented in and the rep didn’t explicitly say that that’s the order of precedence, but my dad and I both picked it up from the way that he was talking about it. As for your writing score, the middle 50% range for HSS is 680-760 (I forgot to mention that last time). Even though that might be a problem on your application, again, I can’t say that it will break you. If you’re doing Regular Decision, you could take the January SAT and maybe get that writing score up a little bit. If you’re doing Early, I wouldn’t worry about it. Yesterday I read somewhere on the College Confidential forums that HSS loves Early Decision applicants because people don’t choose CMU for humanities/social sciences majors as much as they do other top colleges. I don’t know if you’re doing ED or regular, but if you’re doing ED that should work in your favor. I’m happy I could help!
