Having been rejected and deferred at both my early schools I am seriously worried about my chances at my tougher RD schools. Based on my stats, and the degree of competition this year, what are my RD chances at Duke??? (I know it's definitely a reach but any opinions would help)

Extra notes: I'm an Asian (Indian) applicant that goes to a pretty competitive public HS in upstate NY

^ seriously? U’m not overly familiar with those programs, but they are similar caliber schools. True penn might be easier because it is ED, but U Chicago is only EA.

Chicago’s EA acceptance rate was 22.7%, and Penn’s ED was about 26.2% (Duke’s was 28.3%). RD rates tend to be universally pretty low for elite schools, and so I expect Duke’s RD to be anywhere from 10-12%. So depending on the strength of the pools (as most colleges claim that their early pools are more competitive), Duke RD is probably slightly harder than Chicago EA and Penn ED.

(Honestly though, Duke’s applicant pool is probably slightly less competitive than Chicago’s and Penn’s, so I don’t know… I think you have reasonable, though not great, chances. Probably a low reach.)

If it makes any difference it was Penn WHARTON ed that I was rejected from. Wharton’s ED rate is significantly lower, but regardless I understand that Duke is a reach.

Duke is a tough nut to crack for admissions. My son’s close friend was rejected ED with stats similar to yours. However, I have known kids accepted with such a profile. The problem you have is that there really is nothing to set you apart from the many applicants with your stats. With some sort of “hook” that the school wants, you would have a good chance at acceptance.

Duke’s admissions method is based on a point system of 1) SAT1 scores 2) Grades/ class rank 3) Difficulty of courses 4) teachers’ and counselor’s rec 5) Extra curriculars and 6) Essay. The SAT1 scores are often the cincher if all else is a certain level. Bear in mind most kids who apply there are top notch kids so getting more than a “3” rating in those areas is very difficult.
