My essay made my college counselor cry.
My teacher recs should be very good--my teacher says he had great things to say.
ECs: Figure Skating, Yearbook (editor in chief), Art (art club president, photography commissions, school paper photographer), Youth in Government (outstanding statesman, Presider), Community Service Leader, Speech and Debate (speech captain, NFL degree of excellence), School Chorus, NHS, NFHS, Girl Scouts (silver award), French Club.

No takers? none?

In my opinion you do have a shot, based on others I know that are there now. Not sure what your unweighted GPA is, and your scores seem a little on the low side. Being from South Carolina should help. You have nice activities. Show interest and hope for the best!

tank you!
bump :)

bumpabumpbump

I mean, your question is really broad and I think you can answer it yourself. Of course you have a shot. It does not take much to look up the average scores on GW’s website and compare it to your own. Your scores and stats are comparable to GW’s stats, so yes you have a shot.

But those standardized scores are low. 25 and 570=low. So I think GW is a reach for you. What’s your rank?

Of course you “have a shot”! I’d say less than 50-50 chance however. Low ACT and total SAT combined score less than 2000. What is your “Unweighted GPA” and class rank if available. Why do you think the disconnect between your SAT writing (Very good) and your Verbal (Low) - these are usually closer to each other.

Make sure you have applied to some “safety” schools you would actually want to attend. Unfortunatey, GW acceptance is still quite a “numbers” game - regardless of EC’s, ltr’s of rec, etc.

Best of luck.

CJ

I posted this after I got my ACT, which, as you can see, was very low. I felt like I wasn’t going to get in anywhere, especially not GW, which is very high on my list. I have since decided not to send my ACT score, but it still made me feel awful. I don’t have an unweighted GPA, and I wouldn’t begin to know how to calculate it. My school doesn’t rank; we’re very small. The disconnect between my score is that I have a reading problem. My eyes don’t work together. Give me more time and I score a consistent 750 in verbal.

Thanks for your input, y’all. I appreciate it.

Have you ever looked in to getting testing accommodations for your problem? You may qualify for additional time.

Nah
I’m too principled. Life doesn’t give extra time. I believe that a big part of the SAT is testing your ability to sit in a chair for the right amount of time and focus. I wouldn’t accept the extra time if I could.

Noble, but you have to compete against people who don’t feel the same way. Your 570 is going to be compared to 700s from people who had extended time. A LOT of people get extra time for assorted reasons-some for reading disabilities, some for ADD, some for anxiety.

Make sure you visit campus and ask for an interview. That shows the level of interest you have in GWU. They like to keep their yield up. (yield = number of accepted students that attend)

Unfortunately, its too late to request an interview. From the website:
“The last day to request an interview is November 15.
If you an applicant still interested in requesting an on- or off- campus interview please do so as soon as possible through the GW Admissions Activity Center.”

I never interviewed, but I have shown interest on several occasions-high school visits and 2 tours of GW. Oh well.

gah i hope i get in.

Low test scores.
Weaker GPA.
ECs are nice.
Honors/APs are fine.

It’s a reach because of the low test scores and weaker GPA, but perhaps possible.

And, if you want to justify your weak test scores with a disability,… ask for accommodations. Either the disability affects you and you should receive accommodations, or it doesn’t affect you and you can’t justify the low scores with it.

I’m not getting accommodations. I don’t want them. I’m done taking the SAT. Besides, I’m in the midrange for all except verbal. I don’t think it’s THAT big of a reach.

so, honestly why did you bother making this post if you’re so incredibly confident about your chance of admission?

Like other posters have said, if you are going to comment that you have a disability, you should be using that as an advantage to get in. If you simply make the point that you have this reading problem but choose to not get help, don’t bother mentioning the problem.

I mentioned it because CJ Madison asked. I haven’t gotten extra time because I don’t think anyone with a disability (if you want to call it that) deserves extra time–myself included. Might start a threat about that, it sounds controversial.

Why does anyone make a chance threat? I’m not extremely confident that I’ll get in, I just don’t think it’s as much of a reach as you’re saying it is. Still a reach though.
