Do I Have A Shot?

Hey whats up fellow CCers, I really like the feel and academics of Brown and want to major in something involving history, maybe prelaw after. I have what I consider great ECs and essays (a former admissions rep at Yale said they’re incredible) but my academic profile’s lower than what Brown would want. Give me some honesty and chance me, so I can decide if it’s worth giving it a shot thanks.

SATs: 2000 (730 CR, 700 W, 570 M)
I took them again in October and waiting on the scores, hopefully the math goes up.

SAT IIs: World History 770, Literature 660

AP US History: 5

GPA: 90/100 UW (no weighted GPA), ranked 122 of 697

Wrote what’s been called a standout essay by everyone I’ve shown it to (by people at Princeton and a former admissions rep from Yale)

I have a great rec from my history teacher for two years and possibly one from a former alumnus who had me who was a pitching great for them.

ECs and awards:

National Honor Society
Boys State (won Public Advocate)
Captain, CHS Swimming 11-12
All-County and All-League Honors in swimming, 4-yr Varsity letterwinner
Keystone Club President, VP, Sergeant-at-Arms
350 plus volunteer hrs
Boys and Girls Club of my town’s Boy of the Year award
Naval Academy Summer Seminar, Most Outstanding Candidate

My own production company (I produce and DJ and am a recognized artist)
Worked as a counselor, maintenance, lifeguard, and food preparer/server at a local bagel joint.

Music’s my passion and I conveyed that in my essays. What do you think?

bump bump…

Your math score is extremely low for Brown. You know that. I hope you will at least get it up to a 600, when the new scores come out.

And I don’t think your ECs are really that amazing, when compared to many of the people on CC, who are almost super-human.

Your class rank is not that great either, especially by Brown standards.

Being a recognized artist may help. I have no idea how they would treat that. Brown would probably like that.

Also, have you only taken ONE AP class, or is that one simply the only one you got a 5 in?. Just as a comparison, my son will have taken 14.

Unfortunately, my honest opinion is given that Brown’s acceptance rate is about 10%, that you probably won’t get in. I would say that a school like a Georgetown, an NYU, or a Boston College might be more in your range, but of course, I am simply giving you my “gut” reaction, and you might well get into Brown.

I wish you luck though. It is a total crapshoot. My brother’s son got into Cornell, but got wait-listed at Syracuse. My friend’s son got into Washington University, but got rejected at Boston College.

Further, given your talents, and your varied interests, I would also consider some of the top liberal arts schools. Some of the top students don’t apply to those schools, so this might give you a slighly better chance of admission.

Thanks for the honest opinion, that’s what I’m looking for… My school only offers 6 AP classes, Calc USHistory World History Physics English and Chem. I’m taking AP English this year and college courses as well to make up. Thanks for the chances and the advice
