Do I have any chance at all in '08?

Hey guys, I’m a junior in HS, but I’m wondering if I’m on the right track for acceptance at Bucknell. Any thoughts?

Heyy I'm a junior too. Being sick during an SAT pretty much sucks. I took it in October with a bad fever, tons of coughing, etc. and was really dissatisfied with my score. However, once I retook the rest when I felt well, my score went up 200 points. So, my advice would be to definitely retake the test.

You seem like you are taking a tough courseload && you have a good amount of EC's... so just retake the SAT's, keep working hard in schoool, and just keep up the college search. :)

Im not accepted yet, but it looks like you're on the right track. Keep the GPA up, continue the good ECs, and work on those SATs. The PSATs didn't mean much for me, I got in the 1700s but ended up getting a 2030 on the SAT.

es222,

I'd say you should be a match with Bucknell as long as your SAT makes it to the 2000 range, your gpa is strong, and you submit enthusiastically strong recs and essays. Bucknell admits students by the major that they have declared on their application, so some programs in engineering and management are very competitive. If those are your interests, Bucknell may become a reach, if any one area of the application is weak.

you look like you have a really good shot

lol but dont put Who's who on your application, its a sham.

strong gpa? I don't know about strong. it's not bad, but idk about great lol.

gpa and sat need to improve

I'm afraid that your stats are not automatically enough to get you into Bucknell. You need to raise your SAT (above 2000), gpa (it looks like your weighted gpa is not much different than your unweighted), and gain significant extracurriculars -with leadership in your school of 100 class size. Try to take a challenging coarse load next year, and secure wonderful recs from your teachers. I think Bucknell's admit rate was 30% this April; so you should be more impressive than 7 out of every 10 applicants. I'm not sure which state you are living, if it is a state with few Bucknellians, then they would be more interested in you bringing some goegraphic diversity. Good luck.

both of you need to work on GPA and SATs. Bucknells becoming harder to get into. A 2000 SAT may not cut it. and a 3.4 certainly will not.

Does it make it any better if I mention that I jumped a year in math and I play an active role in a local soup kitchen. Also I plan to go ED

Solomonenator, Jumping a year in math is not enough to set you apart at Bucknell, same with the soup kitchen, although that is still important. As for early decision, you would probably be deferred into the regular pool with the stats you currently have. So, ED not mean an acceptance. You really need to increase your SAT and GPA to be competitive at Bucknell.

Live in a New York suburb

SATs (will take again in fall)
Math: 680, Verbal: 630, Writing: 620

My school hasn't done GPA breakdown/rankings yet, but out of 100 my unweighted grades have ranged from 95 in freshman year to 97 in junior year (probably 97 to 99 weighted).
10th grade- 5 on World AP
11th grade- taking AP English, U.S. history, European
12th grade- will take AP English, Gov, Environment, Stats,

ECs: 4 honor societies, Science Olympiad, conducting biology research at Hofstra this summer, active community service throughout 9th and 10th grade, 5-time selection to All-County band/orchestra, Molloy college orchestra, volunteer in pit orchestras for plays. I play the bassoon, which is a unique instrument, so I was wondering whether that might be an admission factor as well.

Thanks for any help/suggestions for other schools.

calhounbass00n,

I love that you are doing science research this summer and if you apply to Bucknell as a science major, they will too. You have done a fantastic job in high school with challenging courses, extracurriculars and great grades, but you have a weakness with an SAT of 1930. If you can bring that score up, then I think you have a very good chance of admittance (regular decision)into Bucknell. Yes, your musical ability shows that you are a well rounded student, and Bucknell would find that a real plus. Unless your SAT rises, apply early decision for the best chance of getting into Bucknell.
