Yeah- I think you have a really good shot.
I received my acceptance to MSU on October 7th.
I have a 3.38 GPA and 24 on my ACT. Sent in 3 recommendation letters.
No AP’s and no hook. Took Enriched English all 4 years. No college courses.
Out of state student seeking financial aid.

So-I wouldn’t worry about it-your stats look good.
Good luck!

Well MSU does have an awesome journalism program.

Be prepared though, if you do get in, MSU’s financial aid to OOSers is not great unless you’re in the honors college and you won’t be in the honors college.

romanigypsyeyes is unrealistic in his or her feedback to applicants. There are a lot of current students at MSU with HS GPA of 3.0 and less than a 24 on ACT. You will most likely be accepted.

The GPA is lower than MSU average but the ACT score is above average and the high school curriculum is much more rigorous than the typical MSU student. I agree with SPARTAN45 that the OP will most likely be accepted. OOS should not make it more difficult.

SPARTAN, I am a her. I go by what I see and by what I know from friends in the admissions office. You can criticize my chances all you want, but there are not many people in the incoming class coming in with under a 3.0. The middle 50% of admissions for the incoming 2009 was : High school GPA: 3.41-3.85, Composite ACT: 23-27.

What did I say? Oh yeah, ACT is in the middle and the GPA is into the bottom 25%.

Good day people. I hope the OP gets in but I’m not giving him/her unrealistic expectations and I am DEFINITELY not telling them it’s a safety.

Thank you,SPARTAN45. romaingypsyeyes is notorious for giving unrealistic chances. She never gives anyone a firm safety or match. I think i’monaboat has a great shot at acceptance. MSU is not hard to get in to, but it is still a great school. Qualified applicants shouldn’t be misled , especially if they are most likely to be accepted.

Notorious for it? For what, all 4 people I have chanced? I said he has a shot but not a great one because of his GPA (which as I pointed out is low). To say he is a safety with less than a 3.5 and OOS is not right. I am not trying to mislead him, but all I can go on is stats and personal experiences. He asked for opinions, geez.

While MSU is getting more selective, I think you’re still in good shape to get in. MSU does take into account Honors/AP classes, and your GPA is probably as good of a 3.0 as you can get. Not a safety by any means, but the odds, I think, are in your favor.

dont worry about what romanigypsyeyes is saying obviously she has no clue about what is a reach. You are 100% in with ur stats, I got in with a 2.9 and a 24 ACT and im out of state. Dont let her foolish criticism get to you. Its a safety for you

That’s interesting because on your other chance threads, you said that you have a 3.87 weighted. MSU looks at weighted grades. They saw that you had a 3.87, not a 2.9 (or 2.8 as you say elsewhere). So you did not get in with a 2.9/24, you got in with a 3.87/34.

Just out of curiosity, msr, when did you receive your admission letter?

my guess is that MSU will request your 1st semester grades from your senior year and then after that (provided you do well) you’ll most likely be admitted.

I did say that previously, yes. It was a mistake. Someone sent me a PM about MSU’s grading criteria and I realized that I had been mistaken. From what I know now, they use the GPA that you send them but take out the non-core courses. I just never went back to that post and corrected it. Sorry.

In other posts, I have said that they look at weighted. I honestly don’t know what I was thinking on that thread (although I can only find one place I said it, please show me more if there are more).

I am done with this argument though. It is seriously ridiculous. Go back and look at fa-la-la’s chances on people and a few others and they all say basically the same thing I do and yet you guys jump on me. Whatever. This poor kid just wanted chances. He got some opinions. Now he can do what the rest of us did and sit and wait.

All I can say is good luck OP! And as I said before, I hope that you get in and we see you next year.

MSR123 - tell me more about your stats and the approximate date of application. How long did it take to get a reply? Did you have letters of rec? Is a slow response a bad sign?
