Do I have any chance at Stanford admission?

<p>Hi, I'm a senior in Massachusetts public school (the school is about average for mass). I'm Asian (well half but I always put down Asian.)
I have 4.33 weighted GPA, 5th in my class.</p>

<p>I applied regular decision for engineering (undecided). </p>

<p>My SATs are: Math: 670, Reading: 710, Writing 720. (standardized tests are not a strong point for me.)
My SAT IIs are atrocious :/ ... Math II: 660, Bio Molecular: 560, US History: 580</p>

<p>I think my college essays are decent? I don't know if they stand out.</p>

<p>My extracurricular activities include: 3 seasons of varsity cross country, indoor track, and 4 season of outdoor track. I was captain for cross country this year.
I'm in band. I play four instruments as a hobby. </p>

<p>Community service: none worth noting really...just played in pep band and that counted as service</p>

<p>My employment includes: summer life guarding, USA Hockey Reffing, golf caddying, and restaurant work. I feel they'll like the reffing and life guarding; shows leadership. </p>

<p>One of my teacher recommendations is great, the other one I didn't see.
Award stuff includes: Cum Laude Society, National Honor Society, Columbia University Junior book award, Academic Excellence awards, math excellence awards, High honor roll, etc. </p>

<p>Any other information that would be helpful just ask. </p>

<p>2) it is highly unlikely that you will get into Stanford.</p>

<p>There is a common misunderstanding about the difficulty of getting into Stanford.</p>

<p>Test scores are just the beginning. AFTER you have achieved the necessary GPA and test scores, you then need a “hook”.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, you are Asian (overrepresented), your essays “don’t stand out”, and you have no amazing accomplishments (don’t worry, most of us don’t).</p>

<p>But the good news is that there are plenty of schools where you can get the same quality of education. you do NOT need Stanford to become accomplished. you certainly do NOT need Stanford to be happy (which is what life is about anyway, isn’t it?). There are plenty of top schools where you can get in.</p>

<p>well what would you consider a top school? I don’t think I could make an Ivy League, but i’ve been accepted to BU, umass amherst, and northeastern…and hopefully UCLA, or UC Berkeley, would you consider any of those top schools?</p>

<p>my asian, female friend with much more impressive test scores and GPA and essays that literally made her english teacher cry and great although not incredible ECs was rejected EA from stanford this year. im not making conclusions on this one scenario, but it seems to confirm what alex is saying about their admissions.</p>

<p>You should still try. You never know what could happen.</p>

<p>Either way, you’ll probably have a way higher change than me who’s an international student applying for FA at Stanford…</p>

<p>The thing is, Stanford is one of the top universities in the world, so they have no shortage of applicants with incredible test scores and GPAs. Even if you DO have an incredible hook, admission is still going to be a crapshoot.</p>

<p>I think he’s a lock for Stanford. Top schools don’t just want the exact same student hundreds of times. Your ECs are what will carry you over if you have a high GPA and high scores.</p>

<p>Jahaba thanks for the confidence but there’s no way i’m a “lock for Stanford.” My tests aren’t great, and my ECs are decent but not standout…what makes you that confident?</p>

<p>Maybe I exaggerate a little bit, but you have a 4.33 gpa unweighed, class rank of 5 (just 3 away from Salutatorian); I wouldn’t automatically surrender. I would apply to Stanford if you really want to go but apply to other schools too that you would also want to attend.</p>

<p>I would consider BU, UCLA, and Berkeley all top schools :)</p>
