Do I have any chance at UC Irvine?

Acad 10 - 12 3.25 GPA Rank: 106/547
Acad Overall 3.1786 GPA Rank: 120/547
Acad Overall Weighted 3.4643 GPA Rank: 109/547

Junior Schedule: Grades as of the moment

Calculus AB AP - A
US History AP - B
Chemistry - A (Don't ask, I had made the most stupidest mistake of my live when I agreed when my mother and counselor told me to take Physical Science instead of Bio freshmen year because I had a 90% in my 8th grade science class...)
Spanish 3 - B
Art 1 - B (Finish art credits)
English 3 - A
Volleyball - A

I got a 1620 on my SAT, I will be taking the ACT and SAT to try and boost my scores up..

I play volleyball, do community service, go to a chinese language school weekly, in CSF, interact club, Amnesty, Chinese club, Students Run LA(prep for marathon)

Planned Senior Schedule-
Calculus BC AP, Enviro AP, Psychology AP, English 4, Govt/Econ, Volleyball

I want to major in engineering

Do I have a shot at UCI? Because I slacked off so much during high school, do you think I could get in?

I was rejected this year with a 4.0 weighted and a 2120 SAT I; but I know plenty of people that were accepted with lower stats.

They focus on GPA more than SAT, so try to bring up your History, Spanish, and Art

with your stats i think you have a shot

The GPA is kinda low for UC Irvine. The vast majority of admitted kids were in the top 10 of their class. That SAT must go up…

Don’t sweat the art/music/gym grades.

If it’s not too late, try to get some leadership positions.

It’s a reach, but not impossible.

If you’re into good public universities, look into Georgia Institute of Technology, Penn State University Park, University of Florida, a couple SUNYs (Binghamton, Geneseo)…

What would my projected SAT/ACT score have to be?? How much higher will my GPA go up if I somehow manage to get an A in APUSH? Spanish is already impossible, the teacher makes the class harder than the actual AP class.

I’d say that it is a reach based on SAT and GPA mostly. Your ECs are average and I do not think that they can make you stand out from the rest. As someone said previously, you don’t have leadership positions. However, this is not absolutely neccesary. If you have made great contributions to your clubs/activities, just make sure to point this in your essay/resume and keep it up.

Here are the average stats for Irvine and all the UC’s:

[UC Admissions Statistics](http://www.ophs.opusd.k12.ca.us/uc_admissions_statistics.htm)

^that data seems to be inconsistent with what UC has posted

[University of California - Admissions](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles.html)

So if I get a good ACT score, would it still be a reach? Let’s assume I get a B in APUSH and Spanish, A’s in all other subjects.

What can anyone here tell you that the admissions stats can’t?

i got in with 1570 SAT and 3.9 GPA :)

sub-par SATII scores.

2 year tennis and 100+ community service hours :D.

First gen student, ELC, fluent in 4 languages :)

not much stand out, but i still got in. It was my safety school too.

Well, 'it’s pretty much impossible for me to get my GPA from a 3.1786 UW to a 3.95 UW, or my 3.4643 W GPA up to 3.95 W… What if I got an ACT score like 28 or more? Would I have a chance?

Wow Engineering… Well I say do well on your SAT I and II…
At least hit 1800… and for math II get 600+
GPA…You can bring that up too :]
B in art? PFFT. get that to an A…
I say just get 3.75 and let your ECs shine :]

definetly raise your sat I score. try to raise your art grade. write a good essay and have a lot of ECs and you should have a chance although it is hard to get in for engineering.

Are you in-state or out-of-state?

I applied as an out-of-state student which means the admit rate was much lower than what it would be for an in-stater. I was accepted. Something to take into consideration, when you go to apply for a UC they calculate your GPA differently than your high school does. They more or less ignore most of your freshman year grades which benefited me. Don’t count yourself out; you never know. I thought it was a very high reach for me and I got in no problem. Good luck to you.

I’m in state…

I will be retaking the SAT I my senior year… But now, I’m going to take a shot at the ACT in June… I’m alos taking my SAT II’s the week before my SAT.

Is it okay to not have a SAT score, but have an ACT score?

BTW: Raising my art grade is impossible. We don’t learn actually, just do projects, and only 2 people in my art class got an A.

my main option right now is an engineering maybe, but I’m undecided… I’m thinking of also being a counselor, maybe psychiatrist, or an engineer. IDK.

It is fine to submit your ACT instead of your SAT (I did). However, I believe you still need to submit the two SAT II scores. I wouldn’t worry about those too terribly much. I didn’t do outstanding on them but I was fine.

Just try to get your GPA as much as possible and you should be all right. Again, I got in as an out-of-state students with very few ECs, a decent GPA (UC GPA of a 3.85?), and a low-average ACT (29). I wouldn’t stress too much over it. Also, try to make your essay very strong.

TheGoldFinch - a 29 on the ACT is not low-average. The national average for the ACT is 20.

iverson - my D got in last year (accepted in January(?) ) with a 3.8W gpa and 27 ACT, 1800 sat. We believe that she was accepted partly based on the fact that she had strong musical theater background AND the fact that she WASN’T Asian. From what I’ve heard, UCI is trying to broaden their student body and make it more of a “fun” school in addition to an excellent academic experience (ie: UCLA, UCSB). In my opinion, they should change the name to UC Newport Beach and all of their problems would be solved!

Dude you have a so-so chance, definitely need to bring up the SAT.
I have the same problem with my Spanish teacher as you do lol
I had her 2 years in a row

As the days pass by, I am really beginning to doubt myself. IDK if I could even get into UCI. I’m almost burnt out from school, there’s a little under a month left, and it’s usually when I raise my grades, but they aren’t raising up(perhaps I’m just burnt out already?)

Here’s my senior schedule for next year:

Calculus BC AP
Physics C AP
APES
eng 4
govt/econ
volleyball

I’m going to apply as an environmental engineer, do many people sign up for this major? Can I get into UCI easier with this major(I do want to become an envior engineer btw)
