I am interested in Michigan but can’t justify spending the $100 to apply if the best end result is a $60,000 bill. I am an OOS student applying for engineering, didn’t apply EA. 4.4 GPA, 34 ACT, decent extra curriculars etc. Do I stand any chance at getting a merit scholarship?
I guess I should add a bit to academics - will have completed 12 AP courses + multivariable calculus and linear algera through dual enrollment. Through junior year had taken CS (5), USH (5), calc bc (5), chemistry (5), physics 1 (4), and lang (4).
No. They rarely give any merit for even in state.
There are only a few merit scholarships like the Stamps (full tuition). In-state has many small scholarships. What is your unweighted GPA?
3.96
Michigan engineering offers a limited number of merit scholarships, up to $20K/year for OOS I believe. Check out their website, as some require separate application. I am sure they are quite competitive, so I can’t guess your chances. In my experience, you won’t hear until January or February however. Good luck.
Stamps offered only 4 oos students last year. But it covers full tuition + room and board + 3K/year allowance + 10K summer fund.
You don’t have to come from a family living in poverty to get generous financial aid at UMich. If money is tight enough that you have to think hard about spending that $100 to apply…there’s an excellent chance you’d qualify for more aid than you might think. If you love the school and think there’s a good chance you’d like to go there, it’s worth the fee to see what they can offer you. Just having that knowledge and not having to wonder for the rest of your life…is worth the application fee.
And hey…good news…the application fee is $75, not $100:) Best wishes.
@MaryGJ unfortunately we’re “full payers” but the $75 application fee + the $12 to send an ACT score + the +$5 to send a transcript x schools really adds up…
Last year high stats DS was accepted direct to Ross- got nada merit money.
Run the NPC and then decide whether to apply. Michigan is very generous with FA even for OOS. There are so many outstanding students at Michigan (especially in engineering) that you will need to have done something extraordinary to qualify for the big merit awards. Michigan does have a lot of small merit scholarships. Have you emailed the scholarship person at CoE?
Umich rarely gives merit based scholarships in general, even for in state students. Everybody who gets accepted performed well academically as a high school student. As somebody who has a good GPA for an engineering student, they wouldn’t give me anything. If you really have a demonstrated financial need, they will at least give you a loan. Keep in mind that because umich is a public institution, they are under no obligation to provide financial support to out of state students. Going out of state is a choice you make at your own will, as you have the option to stay in state, thus making that decision implies your willingness to pay that money.
FWIW I recieved $25k / year merit (not need-based) aid through the College of Engineering. Class of 2020, applied EA, OOS (New England area), female, 35 ACT, 3.95 (uw) / 4.95 (w) GPA, decent but not amazing extracurriculars. No idea how common this is but they certainly do have some, if not many, significant merit aid awards.
Congratulations! D has similar stats and would be thrilled with an award like that. Did you have to apply separately or were you automatically considered?
@CollegeT11 are you kidding me? That is incredible! I am in New England as well and thought I would never have a chance of a merit scholarship…(I gotta get in first) but that gives me at least a bit of hope.
@hebegebe I actually initially did not receive any aid at all so I ended up emailing a financial aid representative for Michigan asking for more aid sometime in March or April I believe and about a week later I was awarded the scholarship (but I didn’t have to apply separately for it or anything).
Very happy how it worked out and very happy to be here
Probably because @CollegeT11 is female. As an Asian male, the farthest from being a minority engineering student, I have been able to get absolutely nothing from the college, despite applying every year and am IS, even though I will be graduating magna cum laude tomorrow.
I thought my S might qualify for a merit scholarship, at admitted students day, the dean of admissions said something like “If your oos kid hasn’t heard about a scholarship, please don’t call our office. Go home and write a check or choose another school”. I did read somewhere subsequently that they’re trying to provide more merit for oos students but I believe it’s few and far between.
if you look at their student profile here:
http://www.engin.umich.edu/college/about/facts
you’ll see that the median act score is a 33, I’d guess you may not be at the 75th percentile.
I wonder if you might be able to have a conversation with someone in fin aid before applying.
