and basically I got straight rejected from UIUC. It was one of my low match/saftey schools, as the average person from my school that was accepted had a 3.65 and a 2100. In addition the College of Engineering has a 35% acceptance rate. The rest of the list: UCB, UCLA, UCD, UCSB, USC, CMU, UMICH, Georgia Tech (was deferred in ED) all have less than 20% acceptance rates (or barely above) and as such i feel like there is very little chance I get into any of them. I have gotten into Purdue and UMin, and for both of those schools they want me to let them know quickly so I can find good housing. I’m wondering if it’s time to give up on these other schools and just go to Purdue/Umin, as both are decent schools and I’m sure I will do well there.

You’re Asian so it’s a bit more competitive for you, so that may be a factor.

The school may have had another person just like you with better essays and a better GPA.

Everybody has a similar resume, so if you didn’t sell yourself in your essays then your chances are a bit low.

Nobody will know what your chances are at any college because only you can judge that. Did you do your best on the essays? Did you present your unique personality that will make you stand out in your essays? Were your essays genuine?

At the end of the day, you are the person getting accepted not your resume.

Congrats on your acceptances! You do not need to choose/accept now. Some schools allow you to apply for housing before accepting for a small non-refundable deposit (I think $25 UMinn) or guarantee housing if you apply before a certain date (I believe Purdue’s deadline is May for guaranteed housing). If you can, apply for housing at UMinn. And you are in the same boat as many others applying to Purdue so I’m sure some others are also still waiting to decide. You should know well in advance of May where you would like to go.

As to your rejection, it happens. No one here can truly “chance” you or explain why you were rejected.

Enjoy the wait with the rest of the applicants here and pat yourself on the back for your two options so far.

For your deferral, you may want to send a letter of continued interest and any significant updates to your application.

No way… don’t tell UMin and Purdue right away that you want to commit. You have very good stats. You should be fine for housing as long as you commit by May (at least that’s the case with most schools). I think you have good chances at your other schools.

Don’t tell right away- housing will be there. You need to know all, or at least most of your decisions so that you can evaluate your best choice. Flukes and weird things always happen, so don’t worry- you still have a chance. Just wait and see what time tells

You are permitted to make a deposit first. If in the end a more favorable school accepts you, then you can still choose to attend that school instead. Worst case is you lose the deposit you paid.
