I am in my first semester of Junior year. I live in Michigan and attend a top high school in the state (a very competitive high school).

Every year I took AP/Honors classes and currently have a 3.8 GPA unweighted. I think I will finish with 6 AP classes and 3 honors classes. I've taken the ACT and got a 28 (I'm taking it again soon and hoping to get a 29 or a 30).

I know I will write good essays and have good recommendations. I've played Varsity soccer for 3 years and might be a captain Senior year. I'm in NHS and Spanish club for two years. In the summers, I did a voluntary program in Detroit and helped inner city kids.

I'm planning on applying early action. What are my chances of getting in?

Yes, it would hurt your chances because those applicants are people with major hooks (things that make applications stick out). Also, the school is getting more and more competitive. You need to raise your score.

As long as you keep your grades up and stay involved, yes, you’d likely be a competitive applicant.

You honestly already are a competitive applicant, but you definitely want to find ways to increase your chances (and getting that 30 would do so).

I think you have a good shot at getting in just they way you are. Of course, a 30 ACT would solidify that. Many see UofM as a top-level school so they think a 28 is bad, but in reality, it is a state school. For students that are in-state, like you, it isn’t as hard to get into as a similarly qualified private school would be.
