Holy Cross is my dream school. It was the very 1st college I visited in the fall of my junior year, and it was the last school I visited this past fall when I went back to Interview. I interviewed with a current senior and thought the interview went very well. I've also gone on some of their on line chats.

I'm a good, not a great student that has to work really hard for the grades i've gotten. My LOR's are good and I think my essay is also strong. I intend to major in English.

My UW GPA thru junior year is 90.66 (I guess that's somewhere around a 3.6?). My 1st quarter average this year was 93.86. All of my english/history/language classes have been at the honors or AP level. I'm taking college psych this year as well. AP classes taken have been:
AP world (4)
AP Lit (4)
AP US History (4)
AP Lang.
AP Spanish
AP Gov.

My biggest struggle has always been math/science (my essay was actually about math). I did take 4 years of math thru pre-calc (81 1st quarter). Unfortunately I failed last year's NY state Regents Trig final, but passed the class with an 80 for the year.

With science I took 3 labs - bio, chem., and earth. Didn't set the world on fire with those grades either, especially chem.

So, you can say i'm one of those "lopsided" kids. I know how competitive HC is and i'm sure most of the kids there are strong across the board.

Some other pieces of my app are:

NHS
Spanish honor society
Tri-M (music honor society)
SOAR (2 yr program at my school which culminates with the authoring and defense of a thesis - about 15 kids finished the program)
AP scholar
Editor, school paper (opinions editor junior year)
4 year contributor to literary magazine (pres. senior year)
4 year marching band (3 year honors Wind ensemble)
Natural Helpers 4 years
Vocal jazz choir 3years
work part time at a day care center.

I will not be submitting my SAT's (reading/writing were ok. math, not so much)

You seem like you’ve got a pretty strong chance. Did you apply ED?

I say that because I’m pretty academically “lopsided” too. I’m definitely not a strong math or science student (570 M SAT compared to my CR and W in the 700s), but, like you, I worked through it. By taking the most rigorous courses across the board, you show yourself to be a well-rounded student. This isn’t to say that grades don’t matter, because they do, but they’re still challenging courses (honestly, though, your GPA is good). The APs, the interview and the correspondence with HC through chats really help as well. Plus, your extracurriculars are awesome.

I don’t know what the RD applicant pool is like, but if you’re ED, you’ll most likely be accepted. I really hope that you get in :)

Thanks. I did not apply ED - I thought it would be a more competitive pool. You mentioned that you thought I took pretty rigorous courses across the board, but that’s what i’m worried about - I didn’t take any in math/science.

BTW, I would have killed for your 570 SAT math score - that should tell you where I was LOL!

You might want to look in to Trinity in Hartford because my guess is that you would have a better chance at a lower ranked school like that. Just trying to be helpful

Hello
I am From Jamaica and I applied to College of the holy cross too. I would love to know what you think my chances are . My gpa is 3.2 out of 4, The school system is different here than in America so we don’t have any honors but we do have a grade 13. Which is like pre college courses. I am in grade 13 and this is my final year. I will not be submitting my SATs but this is what I got.
I am the vice secretary of UNESCO
Vice treasurer of KEY club
President of the cultural society re-establishment committee
in the tennis club
in the field hockey club
I only participate within my school for the sports.
I am a member of the departing society and
The inter school christian fellowship.
I volunteer at an animal shelter and teach adults and children how to read and do math in my church’s adult education program.
In Jamaican public high schools we do not have class rankings but at the end of grades 11, grade 12 and grade 13 every school in the Caribbean takes the same exam. These are like our end of high school exams. Grade 12 students take an exam that is called the Caribbean advanced proficiency exam in each subject. in 2011 i took the exam and ranked 10th in Caribbean for the history exam (out of 1890 students from 10 different islands). What do you think my chances are?
Oh yeah I am a black girl from Jamaica
