Ok, I going to be a senior nxt year, and this is my profile

GPA: 3.45(Unweighted… I know i have bunch of Cs… Math was the worst)
SAT: 730 Math 700 CR 720 Writing
Activities:
-Engineering ( I went to Shell Eco Marathon for hydrogen combustion car racing)
-PAVA
-Piano
-Spanish Club

I am applying for architect… And I know… my GPA sucks
So I was wondering… Should I just apply to private schools since I have
pretty good SAT score? I heard public schools they don’t really look at the SAT scores… T^T
Do I have no chance? I want to apply for Architectural Engineering or Civil Engineering for ED…

Nice SAT, luckyg. My son, also entering 12th grade, is in a similar boat as you, but his GPA is worse (SAT CR + M = 1430, GPA = 3.0 ). I called the admissions office yesterday to see what my son could do to increase his chances (for Computer Science), and found out that there are 4 criteria considered by CENG weighted in this order:

GPA through 11th grade – nothing can be done about this now if applying as a freshman.

Rigor of H.S. prep classes taken (including 12th grade) – my son is taking all community college classes for 12th grade (this should help his “rigor” rating.)

SAT score (CR + M only) – 1430 is quite high (97th percentile according to CollegeBoard)

extracirriculars

The admissions counselor said to apply, that if the SAT and “rigor” score are high enough, they just might be enough to overcome the low GPA. I think your chances are actually pretty good, but I know Arch is very competitive.

you have great SAT scores, but pretty much every arch student that i’ve met that got in for fall had greeat SAT/ACT scores AND a great gpa! I’d still give it a shot because you never know.. every year is different! i’d suggest taking college courses while taking your senior year classes.. that definitely boost your chances! cal poly recalculates your gpa to add in any college courses taken! a class for a semester at a community college is equal to a year of a honors class in high school!

Thank you so much for your replies..
When I apply, do I get like second choice major?
and if I put second choice for Civil engineering, would I have some kind of chance to get in?
OH, do Cal Polys have like double major program?

Cal Poly does allow double majors, but you can only apply for one major on your application and then add another one once you are already there taking classes.

The addition of the major is dependent on the department at Cal Poly, so civil engineering is difficult to get into. But if you are interested in doing it, then keep your college GPA as high as possible, take required/support classes for civil engineering and talk to the engineering college to find out any other info.

Also, doing both of those majors would keep you there for at least five years, so you might want to look into an engineering minor or something less rigorous/time consuming.

As for your chances, shoot for As your senior year and you’ll have a chance. Cal Poly don’t count extra cirriculars like UCs and private schools. They only ask how many hours per week were spent on extra cirriculars. It’s lame, but that’s the system.
