I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to tell me what sort of chances I have to get in to Kenyon? I have been looking at other people asking this, and I'm just blown away.... I'm from Ohio and I think I might do ED.

ACT Composite: 30
Eng: 32
Math: 29
Reading: 32
Science: 27
Writing: 8
I'm retaking in October and am aiming for at least a 32.

GPA:
3.75 or so. My lack of APs really does not help it.

Class rank:
I'm ~15 out of 300 or something around that.

-I have always taken honors/AP when available. But I will have only taken two AP classes by the time I graduate. (We don't have very many at my school, unless I'm really heavy into math and history.)
-I'm in my fifth year of Spanish and French (regular, we have no honors languages). I have taken Arabic at a nearby university since sophomore year, and will have finished three full years of it by graduation.
-I have a pretty nice foreign language record. Almost all A's (while taking three), with a couple A-'s thrown in. I have not gotten amazing grades in Arabic, around a B or so.
-Senior year (this year) I am not taking a math or science (but still have four math credits, I took high school courses in 8th grade); they have always been my lower scores because I'm pretty uninterested in them.
-I was in the school orchestra for three years. This year I couldn't be in it due to scheduling conflicts.
-I am a very active NHS member.
-I do a lot of community service with a youth group. I have gone on four week-long mission trips to different states (once to Canada).

I think I'd major in International Studies. I really enjoy languages and other cultures, so I think it would fit me pretty well.

Hi! I think that you have a decent chance. Your ACT score is by no means "low,"--Kenyon's 50% range is 28-32, so that would put you above half of the accepted applicants. I think that your foreign language pursuits are very important and will help your application. However, I do think that by not taking a math or science, you might be seen as not "challenging" yourself during your senior year. I would suggest that you apply, and see what happens! Btw, do you have any leadership positions/extracurriculars such as music or sports?

I wouldn't say I'm the best judge, as I'm in your position as well, but I don't see why you wouldn't have a decent chance. Take time to make your application strong. Focus on parts such as the essays rather than worry about what you can't change-- past grades and standardized test scores. Early decision would certainly give you an edge-- that's what I'm planning to do. Best of luck!

I think you should have a decent shot; however, be absolutely sure the attitude coming from your post never appears in a essay or conversation with a Kenyon rep as it will reflect poorly upon you in light of Kenyon wanting an all-around student. "...They have always been my lower scores because I'm pretty uninterested in them." You don't have to be the best in everything, just don't point out that you dislike certain subjects (especially core subjects like math and science).

Ah, well, I'm more uninterested in the way they TEACH those courses. I'm really interested in the subjects themselves, rote equations and the like always made me FORGET what I was supposed to learn!

Also, I had signed up for AP Calculus and AP Physics this year, but they didn't fit into my schedule. They are at the same time as Spanish and gym (I need gym to graduate). It was a scheduling nightmare this year... do you suppose I'll ever have the chance to explain that I actually signed up for 9 different courses when the maximum (and that's without lunch) is 8?

LAC: I play the violin. I'm not sure if I'll be playing it in college or not. I'm trying to continue practicing this year, but if by the end of the year I'm terrible at violin, I'm not so sure they'll want me.
I've been really limited in what extracurriculars I could I take, as my Arabic class is year-round and gets in the way of pretty much everything (e.g. I was going to play soccer, but Arabic is during every game).
