I am applying to some schools that I realize could be a stretch to get in, however I was wondering if there is any chance that I could get into UVA coming from NY. Here are my stats

3.73 GPA
top 15% in class (one of the top high schools in upstate NY)
30 ACT
3 APs (Calc, Spanish, Gov't. senior year only, I know it will hurt me)
Took 8 honors classes 9-11 (all that were available except english)
Varsity Golf 10-12 Captain
Varsity Wrestling 9-12 Captain
DECA (Marketing)
National Honor Society 11-12
Math Honor Society 11-12
Member of a Volunteer Group
Somewhat active in the church
Worked every summer

I realize that there is a good chance I won't get in, however all opinions would be appreciated. I haven't officially made out my mind to apply yet.

My S had a higher GPA, much higher rank, same ACT, 6 APs in a program ranked in the top 1% nationally, and was an AP Scholar. He was also a two sport athlete all 4 years (varsity in both for 3 years) captain of one sport, varsity show choir, summer employment, and from a unrepresented midwestern state. He was rejected. 2008 and 2009 are tough times to be applying to college, especially as an out of state student at UVA. But numbers never tell the whole story and the process is so random. Good luck to you--I hope you get the college of your dreams. My S ended up at the school which was initally his 3rd choice and he could not be happier. He now believes rejection can be a good thing after the inital sting wears off.

I think your chances for admission to UVA, as an out of state student, are not good. Sorry. You have some good qualities, and I'm sure you'll find the right place for yourself. Of course, I have no crystal ball, and am just responding to what you have posted. Adcom's see a lot more of the candidate than I do. Best of luck to you.
