Do I have any hope for UCLA or UCSD

I am a Junior in High School, I have a current GPA of 3.1 unweighted 3.3 weighted... here are my classes with first semester grades:
1) APUSH (C)
2) Physics P (B)
3) Algebra II (B)
4) French 4 (A-)
5) AP English (C+)
6) Drawing and Painting (A-)
By the end of this semester I am planning on having a 3.5 GPA and taking a few summer classes I am to have a 3.7 when I apply for colleges. So, the question is can I get into UCLA or UCSD with my GPA being a 3.70?

SAT Score: 2320
ACT: 32

Classes for next year:
AP Government
AP Biology
AP Spanish Lit
AP English Lit
AP Psychology
HP PreCalculus

Do I have a chance? What percentage? I want UCLA or UCSD (Revelle).

I can’t really answer your question, but I’m wondering why your gpa isn’t somewhat better than 3.1 given your fantastic SAT and ACT scores.

Hey Psychology101,
Though you have extremely impressive SAT scores, unfortunately, your GPA is much more important, which will probably ding you.
UCLA is THE most competitive UC school now, and UCSD is now second, passing UC Berkeley… I don’t want to bring your hopes down, but it doesn’t look very good /:

Oh of course you have a great chance getting in! although you GPA is not very high, but you have a fatastic SAT score and you have competitive couses next year! If you have good extracurricular activities I don’t see that much of a problem.

I think you have over 90% chance …

Are those SAT and ACT scores real, or are they “projected” like your GPA?

Per the UC Statfinder http://statfinder.ucop.edu/statfinder/default.aspx</a> , admissions results into UCLA during 2009 was as follows, per “UC Weighted Capped GPA” band and per SAT score band:

3.40 - 3.59 with 2100+ SAT: 2.4%
3.60 - 3.79 with 2100+ SAT: 6%
3.80 - 3.99 with 2100+ SAT: 20.6%
4.00 - 4.19 with 2100+ SAT: 51.1%

to the posters above who thought that a high SAT is near guaranteed admission into UCLA, you are now educated. UCs put more emphasis on GPA (actual performance in an actual classroom), than on the SAT (IQ test). You must have both, but GPA is more important. UCLA and Berkeley will admit high GPA, lower test scores more readily than low GPA and high test score.

Go figure. Keep you chin up, do your best, and become part of the 6% that get into UCLA with a 3.6-3.79 GPA and 2100+ SAT.

I have 4.00 WGPA and 2130 SAT and 35 ACT, hope I get a shot at UCLA, already get acceptance from UCI …

A GPA as low as that doesn’t have a great chance at the top UCs, but there’s obviously no reason that you shouldn’t apply. They do accept some (probably very few) people with low GPAs if they have a good application otherwise, and your SAT score helps.

You should apply to a couple of schools (if not mostly) that are less selective than UCLA/SD, because your acceptance is unlikely with even a 3.7.

I do not beieve you are being realistic when it comes to your projected GPA number. You would think this would be simple math for someone with a 2320 on your SAT :D

You would need to get A’s in both of your AP classes second semester, as well as A’s in all 4 of your other classes (and based on your first semester marks, this seems very unrealistic) in order to bring your cummulative gpa even close to 3.5

And in order to bring a 3.5 up to a 3.7 cummulative GPA, it would require more than a couple summer courses. It would take a full load (including many AP classes) and getting straight A’s in all of the courses.

I believe if you worked very hard you would be fortunate to wind up with a 3.4 rather than a 3.7 cummulative GPA at application time.

^ the UC weighted/capped GPA is a little tricky since you are capped at 8 semesters of +1. To OP’s favor is that UC does not count freshman year grades.

Re: your chances at UCSD:

UCSD uses a point formula for admissions. It is found here: [UC San Diego Comprehensive Review Admission Process: Freshman Selection](http://www.ucsd.edu/prospective-students/freshmen/eval-process.html#process) note they use UNCAPPED UC GPA in their formula.

You can do your own assessment of where you will score. Admission last year was I believe 7550+. (give or take 100)
