Do I have any potential at all?

Hey, first post, blah blah…but anyway, back on topic.

So right now, I have a 3.65 GPA…not to great, but not horrible I guess.
Also, my SAT scores are as follows:

Math-750
CR-700
Writing-670

Total-2120

So basically, I don’t think I’ll be able to get that far in life, but I’d still like some opinions.

Are there any good recommendations for colleges for engineering that might accept me? I’ve been looking into quite a few like Cooper Union, CalTech, MIT, etc etc, but I don’t think I can get into those.

Oh, and I’m still a sophomore, so I haven’t taken my SAT IIs yet…

Anyway, I was wondering what are some good colleges I can get into.
I go to quite a competitive school, so I accept a pretty bad class rank, maybe in the 30s out of 350.

Oh, one last question.
If someone was accepted into MIT and Cooper Union, which would you prefer? One is the prestigious school of scholars that EVERYONE knows about, while the other isn’t as well known, but has free tuition [that’s good for my family’s situation]. Of course, loans are possible, but I’m very…“wishy washy”.

Bleah, sorry for being vague, I can’t really express how I feel right now.

Err, another question…what schools should I consider doing “early admission” for? I wouldn’t mind doing early admission for Carnegie Mellon, but I think it would be a waste if I didn’t get in…

Okay, quick summary:

What colleges might I be able to get into for engineering?

Cooper or MIT?

What are good early admissions colleges to try for? [for engineering once again]

I guess that’s it; here’s a few talents I have that “might” give me an edge in life:

Computer hacker, finished learning C++ in 7th grade

7 year pianist, self taught. I have about 7 medals / awards all for distinction / gold medalist.

5 year orchestral clarinet player.

3 year drummer for a Christian band.

A WHOLE LOTTA COMMUNITY SERVICE -.-

3 year film producer for AMVs. I have about 5 awards for those.

I don’t even know how many summer camps I’ve gone to.

That’s all I’ve got…
okay! sorry for going on and on, but I’m very anxious~
Thanks again!

Cooper or MIT?

Cooper or MIT???

Cooper, of course!

No no, are you kidding me? MIT has one of the best engineering programs, if not the best. To be honest, I’ve never heard of Cooper Union, and I strongly believe that MIT will outshine Cooper, in engineering at least.

Check out Lehigh and Bucknell.

ouch, that reply hurts… [lol, don’t take that seriously]

I considered Cooper Union to be my “free ride” through college…due to free tuition and all. But, perhaps due to its “isolation” it might not be worth doing early admission for cooper i guess~

Oh and, ANOTHER QUESTION! [sorry, my guidance counselor doesn’t help me as much as this website…]

-When doing “early admission / early action”, essentially, you can only do this for one school, right? because if you get accepted into to colleges, then you will end up having to refute one, leaving you in…“deep quagmire”… A quick explanation would be nice~

thanks again~

AAGAJA, take a breath and relax. You have plenty of time to research colleges and the programs that interest you. I see a lot of potential from what you posted, so relax, stay on course, and try to enjoy high school and your college search.

Check out Olin.

IF you decide to apply ED, in light of the financial issues you allude to, be careful to pick a school that’s sure (or nearly sure) to give you adequate aid. Also, to keep yourself from going insane while waiting to hear from RD schools (in the event that you don’t get accepted ED) be sure to apply Early Action (non-binding) to a school or two that you are likely to be accepted at and wouldn’t mind attending (check out Northeastern or Case Western Reserve).

heh, sorry i’m a little frantic right now.
anxiety is killing me from the inside out X__X

ANOTHER QUESTION!
What’s the difference between EA, RD, and ED?

EA (early action) is non binding. You don’t have to go if you get in. You can apply to more than one EA school unless the school is SCEA (single choice early action.

ED (early decision) is binding. You have to go if you get in (which sucks if you don’t get good financial aid, so make sure if you do ED, the school promises to give good aid). You can only apply to one ED school.

ED and EA deadlines are usually Nov. 1-15 (depends on school).

RD (regular decision) is non binding. You apply around Jan. 1 -Jan. 15 usually (depends on school).

Another one is rolling admissions. You can apply as early as September and the school fills up spots as soon as they recieve your app. so the sooner you apply the better. This is not the case for the other three. For those you just have to meet a deadline.

Hope that helped. Trust me you will learn so much here on CC. Just don’t let it consume your life. :)

There are many good engineering schools you can get into. MIT and Cooper are both VERY selective (it’s a crap shoot). Case Western, RPI, WPI, Purdue, Michigan.

have u looked into big state schools that are also very good engineering schools; michigan-ann arbor, uc berkeley, illinois-urbana champaign; id say u have a shot at michigan and illinois; 3 very good schools and very well known engineering schools as well. do well ur junior year, u can bring up ur GPA

Seeing as this is clearly a yes or no question, I’d have to go with no.

cooper union is a very good school..cybershot?
