Do I have any shot at all (LSA)?

Hello all,

I am an upcoming senior. My first choice school was UIUC, but after I saw UMich and got to know more about it I became really interested.

I go to a competitive large public school in Illinois
I've had an upward trend in grades throughout high school.
Course load was kind of rigorous. I will have taken 6 AP's by the time I graduate (Latin Lit (4), Latin Vergil, US Hist (4), Calc AB, Psych, Bio) and several honors level classes.
GPA: 3.02 W (really bad.. my weakest point. I didn't try at all fresh and soph years but got straight A's junior..)
School doesn't rank
ACT: 31
No SAT or SAT II's
EC's:
Part time job over summer

Went to a third world country over 2008 summer to volunteer at kid's school full time. I helped out in a campaign for literacy there and taught the little kids the alphabet, basic reading/writing, and simple arithmetic. I spent around 2 months there and it was ~250 hours.

Because I had such a great experience in that country, I returned over the 2009 summer to work with a team of doctors at a hospital to teach impoverished families about hygiene, different diseases, the importance of immunization, etc. Had direct patient contact with the people there. Amounts to ~ 200 hours.

Several state awards and medals for Nat. Latin Exam, not much else.

Rec's are good not great and essay will be great.

I'm a resident of Illinois and am a URM that will apply for financial aid.

What are my chances at the LSA college? Should I even bother applying?

Thank you all

Recalculate your GPA with only 10/11th grade academic classes. Don’t count +/-'s.

If you got straight As your Junior year, you could have a chance, especially with your solid ACT score. Michigan does not consider Freshman year anyway, so when you calculate your GPA, only include Sophomore and Junior year.

My advice to you would be to apply as soon as possible. You will likely be deferred initially, but if you continue to have straight As your Senior year, once Michigan gets your mid-year report, you stand a reasonable chance of getting in.

OOS + extremely low gpa = far reach imo. You need a major hook/great ECs and essays.

Thank you guys, I will take that advice.

BTW my 10/11 GPA is 3.15.

So you had a 2.3 your sophomore year then?

I dont like to admit but yea pretty much. I was not in all honors/accelerated classes junior year so even though I got straight As, the As I got in the regular level classes did not raise me by much.

GPA is the biggest factor. While I don’t know how much of an effect the massive upward trend will be, I think your chances are very low. There’s really not much making up a 2.3.

Hmm yea I thought so. I’ll try my best on my essays and senior year and hope for a slim chance.

Abdul
you’re gpa is very very low.
so that makes you a big reach… virtually no chance of admission.

I think your GPA will really hinder your chances, especially when your are a OOS applicant.

your best bet is to transfer in probably.I haven’t heard of anyone getting in with such a low gpa.everything else is there…

To be honest I’d concentrate on UIUC. It’s a very good school and you’d have a much better chance getting in there, although I’d say that was a reach for you too. Too bad Illinois is kind of weak with it’s public higher education.

Ok guys thank you for the advice. I know I basically screwed myself because of my GPA but no one is to blame except me.

If you’re male you could always apply to nursing and then switch to something else if you’ve been accepted.

^ I actually laughed at that post.

But I’d say your chances are slim. You took rigorous courses and your ACT is very good. I’d say that you won’t be rejected right away. If you have good essays and apply early, you have a better chance of getting in, but as of right now Its a reach. You would probably be wait-listed.

Just apply early as you possibly can and you’ll have a shot. Anyone does.
