I know ECs don't matter but I have a competivive ACT (33) and good grades (maybe just a bit below Dukes average) but I want to know if my ECs are good enough (and not seriously lacking)

Cross Country (Frosh Captain) (1 yr)
Indoor Track (will be 4 years, have won/placed at some big competitions)
outdoor Track (will be 4 yrs)
Student Council (elected) ( a little over 3 yrs, have a leadership posisition)
NHS/Tutoring
Contributor for Newspaper (2 yrs)
Founder of GAA club (Irish sports- 2 yrs, prob have some leadership like captain/pres)
founded a school fan club for after school activities (1 yr)

Interned at colligate baseball league for 2 years (game day operations)
Wrote and helped edit theiryearbook for 3 years
Internship in the British Governmet for a month
Mowed lawns during spring/summer/fall as a job 4 yrs

I know I don't have the best ECs in the world, but are they competitive enough to kinda stand out and not be lacking? Thanks so much, feel free to leave your chances thread.

Your ECs definitely seem to have a direction and are centered around athletics, but don’t really seem to stand out imo. However I wouldn’t say you’re lacking in ECs either.

if i were you i would just leave out the cross country. while yes it shows a leadership position it doesnt really shine.

all your others are pretty solid in my opinion.
you have a really nice mix of sports and other extracurriculars and i think thats important
having founded a club is also a good indicator and i think that will help you. definitely not horrible or average. you should be fine for the most part. internships are always a plus too

To the contrary, extracurricular activities are probably the single most important part of the application for competitive applicants: grades and test scores mostly serve to filter out people with no chance whatsoever, but it’s ECs that get you in.

Also, are you an international student? Duke is not need blind for internationals, so if you need financial aid that would make admissions very difficult.

Mowing lawns isn’t an EC and I wouldn’t list this on your applications. Just FYI!

I think people are saying you’re not competitive because, even though you have better than average ECs, you don’t have a position in the ECs that shows outstanding leadership/success.

For example, you did yearbook and newspaper – but you weren’t the Editor in Chief or assistant editor. You ran track – but you were only captain your freshman year.

Things like being Editor in Chief, Study Body President, varsity captain, band section leader, lead in the school plays, etc are considered “competitive” ECs.

Alright thanks. Then are finding clubs/being president of a smaller club not competitive along with having an internship in a foreign government? Just wondering.

And mowing lawns is work experience/entrepreneurship, no? Obviously that’s not something that’s too important, but I guess it shows that I worked/did something with my summer

^ How is listing “mowing lawns” bad for an applicant? It’s actually beneficial to some degree for applicants to have some work experience.

To the OP: your ECs have focus but you don’t show enough in-depth involvement. Leadership positions would definately help out. Otherwise, you seem like an honest hard worker, which I feel is less and less valued in the college app world IMO.

seems like a good ec’s. What’s your intended major and do you plan on walking on the track team at college? But for duke, my friend told me they like athletic ec’s even if you aren’t intending on joining the teams.

Alright thanks, I think I’m going to have a captain role with the GAA team and a presidential role with the newly formed school fan club that helps organize sporting event fan busses and such (not that big of a deal but it’s something haha) along with my stuco officer position and I should get track cptn in the winter/spring but that will be too late

Thanks. I’d probably walk on for track and based off my times it looks like I’d be rather competitive on the team. I plan on an Econ/ Pol Sci (so I hope my internship in the government looks good for that)

I think you have solid ECs. As previously stated, your ECs show a trend (sports). I also think the internship in the British government will stick out.

Again, before I can judge your chances of admission I must know - are you an international student, and do you need financial aid? Standards for aid-needing internationals are much higher then domestic applicants.

I think your ECs look strong because they show commitment. Colleges know that the things that interest you now may not be the same things that interest you in college, but showing that you are devoted to something looks great! The fact that you got involved in things related to your potential major and have leadership roles is definitely good also!
Of course there will be many qualified applicants applying to schools like duke but I feel like you have good ECs and Im sure you will be a strong applicant! Good luck!
