Do I have need?

Widener has most of its buildings together like a real campus. But Chester is notorious for its crime rate.
Pitt is in the city with no real campus imo but it is so not like Temple in feel - area feels so much safer.
Miami Ohio is a “public ivy” and is well known for having a beautiful campus.

Hahahahaha Yeah it’s the classic example of an HBCU.

Okay thanks. I’m not afraid of dangerous cities as long as the campus itself is nice. It is a little too close though so it really has to impress me to offset that.

Have you considered NC State? The COA might be at the higher end of your budget (38K before FA). Probably a 8 hour drive. Great area with nice weather and is located in the NC research triangle area. Should have nice opportunities for internships and research.

Okay so I just ran the NPC for UVa and UMCP and I’ll no financial aid. So I’m completely screwed. To go to UVa id have to take out a $80k+ loan which would make me a complete idiot so I guess I might as well just cancel the trip now.

UMD would not be that pricey for you, even if you’re out of state. It’s about 40k per year. You’ve got 25k per year, which leaves a 15k deficit. You should be able to earn some of that. And your parents might be able to help out some. At the absolute worst, I think you’d be looking at 40k in debt, and you may get a couple of grand off the tuition in either scholarship or FA, which would bring the amount down even lower.

But what’s wrong with your in state schools? Rutgers and TCNJ are really great, well respected schools. You should be able to attend debt free. What an opportunity that would be for you!

How exactly are you screwed if you have 100,000 in your 529? Pick a school you can afford or you can afford with scholarships. There are plenty

You don’t mention New York, but you might think about Stonybrook. They have biomedical engineering and they love STEM girls, have a special program called WISE, Women in Science and Engineering with special mentoring. They work with Brookhaven Labs and are big on getting students involved in research. Nothing guaranteed there, but my D got full tuition+ offer from them OOS and wasn’t a superstar, just good solid stats like you. Perhaps had a bit higher test scores, but you are lucky to have W as your low score. No one cares about that. People say it’s a suitcase school, so that’s a downside, but they have excellent programs in STEM and a good honors college.

Wow really that would be awesome! I was looking at it but I stopped for some reason. Maybe because it’s too North (I HATE the cold) but I’ll look into it again if there’s merit scholarships involved

Afrer she was admitted she got an invite to a special day at the school where they take the students to Brookhaven to talk to students involved in research and professors so they can see what it’s like to be a student there.

@celesteroberts‌ could you tell us more about the SUNY oos merit your D got? I didn’t realize they gave any.

She got a Presidential OOS scholarship offer last year for full tuition and since she was NMF, received another $3000/yr NMF scholarship.
See scholarships here: http://www.stonybrook.edu/finaid/programs/freshmanmeritbasedscholarships.shtml

She had 4.0 UW/2280/800 Math2. Math as far as Calc BC, but very deficient in science. 4 years of science, but only AP science was Environmental. 2 years were not even honors- regular chem/physics(all her HS had at the time.) ECs were mostly music. Lots of them, but nothing special. No prizes for winning concerto competitions. Just 1a solos on a couple of instruments at the annual solo-ensemble festivals and playing in all the pit/jazz band/youth orchestra/band camps/pep band etc. No amazing recs or anything like that.

She is attending elsewhere, so I can’t say much about the school.

I find the SUNY scholarship chart mysterious since it doesn’t say how much Presidential etc might cover.

I hate those kinds of scholarship sites with lists but no amounts. But anyway that is what she got.

Congrats to your D btw - great stats! Where did she decide to enroll?

ASU. She likes the oboe prof. And the weather. We’re from upper midwest and had some brutal winters the past few years, She got full tuition there for NMF and some dept money too. But I shouldn’t hijack OP’s thread here.

Miami does have Bio-E. Incredibly beautiful campus, safe small town. <a href=“CPB Majors and Minors | Miami University”>CPB Majors and Minors | Miami University;

My D doesn’t like it, much prefers Temple, but we are in rural Ohio so the grass is greener and all that.
