<p>Hey everyone,
I am an Indian applicant to MIT. A 12 passed out student. I will give SAT this December and am aiming for 2380 - 2400. I got 800 each in SAT Subject ( Maths level II and Physics). I have passion for research in cosmos and space ( Aerospace engineering ). According to me MIT is the best institution which provides the research facilities. I don't prefer II T's ( Indian Institute of Technology) as it does not provides research facilities.
I am not any kind of International Olympiad winner ( due to lack of any such facility at my school ). Although I have following add-ons on my extra curricular list:
1) I am 3 year graduate in INDIAN CLASSICAL ( Bengal gharana)
2) Participated in inter zone football championship
3) Was national topper in 10 standard
4) Got Amul vidyashree
5) Have got consistent 80's in all science subject and overall of 85% in 12 standard CBSE
6) Was HOUSE PREFECT in school
7) Participated in IIT Earthquake Engineering Quiz
and all other national level Olympiads.( they are many but not too good ranking)</p>
<p>Apart from these i have got a passion for Physics although I couldn't do anything majour like publish paper or participate in any international olympiads.I have a passion which i can't tell by writing. </p>
<p>Please help me have a realistic view on my "holistic chances" to get admitted at MIT u.g. 2013.</p>
<p>Next, I actually want to pursue my "hobby" rather than "career" which is doing research in cosmos wether it is through astrophysics or aeronautics. Also that is bcuz i love physics very much. moreover i was under impression that we do not decide our majors until our second year at MIT.
Ya, I know I have a weak portfolio as compared to my dear competitors but does that mean's i am no where in the so called "race" ? Does passion counts nothing as compared to grades.Some do get good opportunity others don't are they responsible for that? ( no offence meant, just being curious)
The main thing is do you all think if i can contribute a single bit of me at MIT, that can i belong to that diverse group of people and play my need full role, am i fit to be at MIT...</p>

<p>Are you international? If so, your chances are close to none; MIT rejects virtually all international applicants (quoted from their board; they accept a little over 100 internationals a year). And as an Indian applicant it will be even more competitive.</p>
<p>Yeah, international pool is extremely competitive for MIT. Last year, 147 international students were admitted out of 3,930 (~3.7%, when MIT’s normal acceptance rate is around 9-10%). You have a slim chance, so you’ll have to show them your potential. Also, I don’t think you need to participate in International Olympiads through your school (I’m pretty sure this is true for IMO).</p>
<p>Nobody on this board can tell you about your chances at MIT. Even if MITChris, the MIT admissions officer who hangs out on CC were to see your message, he could not tell you, based on the information in your post.</p>
<p>thanks for your sugesstion but still can you tell me how to improve upon my application to impress the EC’s … it would be greatful if you do help me see the real side and suggest me some more colleges where i have good chances according to my EC’s and intending major that is research in aerospace field … keyword is aerospace and astronomy… thnx again</p>
<p>^ I would highly suggest that you also apply to Caltech, particularly with your intended major(s).</p>
<p>There really is no advice for an international applicant… give it a shot, but don’t expect a positive response. Write the best essays you can and get the best recommendations you can. The rest you can’t control or change so much.</p>
