I recently attended Boy’s State, where I really fell in love with the military. My counselor was drill sargeant, I really got to talk to him about it. I’ve always wanted to fly, and this seems like a great way to do it. Do I have a chance?

GPA= around a 3.8, I haven’t gotten my grades in the mail yet
ACT=just took it, estimated a 30-32

Extras:
Mentoring (approximately 50 hrs. a year)
Volunteer at local library
Boys State (Delegate, Senator)
Student Council (Representative)
Indoor Soccer
Snowboarding for 6 years
Classical guitar training since 6th grade
National Honor Society President
Speech
Drama (Cast as lead in last play)
DECA President
Job as a dishwasher for the last 2 years, still at it, plan on continuing.

Next, when are the deadlines?
-for getting nominated by Congress person
-for handing in materials
-others I’m not aware of?

Thanks for your time.

Edit: I’m also very fit, the fitness tests would probably present little problem for me.

I only had Taekwondo. I know another guy in my area that had NO sports whatsoever. While having none makes you a minority, it won't kill. Having said that, I highly advise being in a school sport, varsity in particular.

You might have time if you hurry, but you'd better talk to a liason officer ASAP. There's a chance you might have to go into a year of college first, but dont sweat it yet. Get contact as soon as possible.

Like Guy4Christ said -- liason officer discussion first.
Deadlines:
- for getting nominated by Congress person (or Senator): depends on their staff -- most mention the nomination process on their website. This is an election year, so often there are earlier deadlines than usual. I'd plan on requesting the nomination info this week, lining up the references, and getting everything submitted by Sept 15.
- for handing in materials -- application due Dec 31(?)
- DoDMERB (Dept of Defense Med Exam Rev Board) -- schedule the physical in August, deal with their questions in Sept/Oct/Nov.

Grades look fine, you'll have a chance to retake ACT, being physically fit is expected. Think about how your activities either support a commitment to service or demonstrate your leadership accomplishments.

You are a little behind the time curve, but you still have enough time to catch up.

Yes, get a sport! Call/e-mail your Congressman and Senators for their applications. Talk to your ALO (Academy Liason Officer) ASAP. They will be the most help to you.

Advice:
-Get a Varsity sport quick.
-Start you applications.
-Start your nomination requests.
-Visit the academy.
-Visit West Point. (and Navy if you are so inclined)
-Apply to all of the academies that you would go to. (Tes USAFA, USMA, USMMA, USCGA, and maybe USNA)
-Choose West Point (lol, jk, but make an informed decision when the time comes)
-Don't give up, more leadership, more sports, run some half marathons, mess around when your JROTC unit if you have one. Sea Scouts is good if there is a unit near you or Venture crews if it interests you. Its a little late but you could look at Civil Air Patrol if you want to be a pilot...
-Apply to civilian schools, and ROTC scholarships.
-DODMERB!!!

You're not at all late. However, you have a lot of work to do this summer. Check the websites for all of the academies. Request information and applications. You will have a different liaison officer from each academy. So make sure you get in touch with Admissions for each SA in which you have an interest. Practice the CFA. Start a running program this summer. Perhaps you can enter some 5k races and be ready for the cross country season. Running would really provide an awful lot of conditioning pre-SA, so will be helpful in any event. You don't have to be the captain of the team. A 30 on the ACT is good, but you may want to consider taking it again so that you can show that you are trying to improve your score. Also, they take the individual subscores and you may end up with a higher composite. Obtain application packets from each possible nomination source. Read the Smallwood books on how to get into each of the Service Academies. You have a great start. Now make sure you take the toughest classes available to you next year. The SA's love Boys' State so it's wonderful that you attended. Do your paperwork now.

I agree with momoftwins. You aren't late, this is when I started applying and I got in. Just do most of your work over the summer and don't stress the sport (or varsity sport). They don't overly praise it, and they won't reject you if you don't have it. I was never in a sport a day of high school. But i will tell you, i had other things outside of sports to back up my "physical side". So see what you can dig up regarding things outside of sports (that is if you can't do crosss country like you wanted)

3.64 isn't going to kill you. If it had been 2.8, then maybe you'd be right to start really fretting, but don't worry too much about tenths of points when you're already up above 3.5.
