Do I have to file tax return?

I’m a sophomore in College and received $400 as income from work study. That’s the only income I had in 2015. I’m going to be claimed as dependent by my parents return. No taxes were withheld. Do I have to file tax return. I have run IRS interactive portal and it says if your income is below $1050, you don’t have to file tax return. I just want to make sure I’m not missing anything. I believe when you complete FAFSA/CSS requirement with school, it wants you to attach your tax return, I hope you can just say I was not required to file tax return.

Based on the facts in your post, you are not required to file a tax return.

But sometimes filing is easier than trying to get a non filer statement later.

OP, you could get free filing of your returns at the IRS VITA. See https://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Free-Tax-Return-Preparation-for-You-by-Volunteers.

Did you have any scholarships or grants that exceeded the amount of tuition, fees and books?

If yes, then you might have taxable scholarship income.
