Do I have to put down my ethnicity in college apps?

SamRam, what do you mean?

One: you are not an admissions officer, so you can’t really compare the stronger essay.
Two: Admissions has a LOT more to do with than just test scores. The uni’s are looking for a specific student to fit the personality of the school. You don’t know what other factors affected your friend’s admissions. Essays give clues, they are not supposed to be an English paper, so who knows why your friend wasn’t admitted.

Trying to “avoid” the name/ethnicity thing can be considered really petty because in the long run, it doesn’t really matter.
URM- under-represented minority

@SamRam: Not cool to stereotype Asians. If you’re going to be racist, be a man and post under your real name for everyone to see.

@ADA110: That’s why I’m curious to see the essays, because my personal opinion is that the adults here have a keener grasp on what essays would sway adcoms positively or negatively.

Classic! Asians see racists around every corner but never see it in themselves.

Im sorry I dont have the essays with me

And @SamRam, that is a very prejudiced remark. Im just here to find out the facts, and the data I have seen leads me to ask the whether it is harder for asians to get in top universities

ADA110, the adcoms will find out your race one way or another.

They ask for your full name… Oh you have an American last name? They also ask for a lot of information on your parents-- their country of birth, their last names, their college name etc… They can probably also see it from some other sources that aren’t coming to mind at the moment.

Anyway, if after the name check and parent background check don’t reveal your race, you probably aren’t significantly indian anyway.
