Hi, I'm in a certain academic competition that is comprised of both an A team and a B team. It is not like varsity and j.v., in the sense that one is not better than the other. They could be called team theta and team omega, the A and B does not signify rank. In this competition, B team scores about the same as A team.

So on my application, since I'm captain for B Team(There is also a captain for A team), do I have to specify which team because it makes it sound like its less competitive than A team. Can my position just be "Captain" and not "B team Captain." I'm not sure if Co-captain is right either because there are 2 equal teams and we don't captain together, we have separate teams. Is this fine, what do you think? Thanks.

The previous B Team captain just listed himself as "Captain" on his application and got into a few ivies.

Do you honestly think holding a “captain” position in a competition will matter at all? Honestly thin about it. If you think you are intelligent, use your critical thinking skills.

Be honest. Say you are captain of B team. It won’t keep you out of your dream school. You can explain the significance of the position somewhere else in the application, such as supplemental information.

I would simply say “team captain”. You are not being deceitful, because you ARE a team captain. Being a captain shows leadership, so I would list it.

I agree with jshain. The A team and B team are equal, so you’re just avoiding an untrue connotation that could potentially hurt you. Simply stating “team captain” does not inflate your actual position at all.
