I’ll be the first to admit, I don’t get how the classes part of this whole college thing works. Are there like, general classes we need to take before working on our major? I’m a poli sci major and I see no reason to take math or science classes.

Please please tell me I don’t have to go through more torturous years of math .

You will have to take GenEd classes that are required of every student regardless of major, which probably include math/science if you don’t have AP credit or transferrable units.

BUT: AP classes may NOT be used towards GE reqs. you may use them to jump to a higher class, ie use them as prereqs, but you are still required to take 6 classes minimum

Bad news: You will still have to find three classes to fulfill your Science and Engineering (SciEng) GEs, and like cutie said, AP scores can only be used to bypass prereqs, not GE requirements.

Good news again: The obvious options are math and science, but thankfully, Davis offers classes in more interesting subjects, e.g. Science and Society (okay, it sounds boring, but the classes under this major aren’t too bad and covers multiple GEs pretty well. One of my friends took Water in Popular Culture; they watched movies in class and wrote summaries as homework); Nutrition; Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior; Animal Science; and Food Science & Technology.

You’ll have to fulfill your Arts and Humanities (ArtHum) and Writing (WRT) GEs in the same way. No need for Social Sciences (SocSci) because your major is under that category.
There is an English Composition and a Social Diversity (but only for one class) requirement as well. You’ll go over all of this stuff in orientation though.

Classes like philosophy, anthropology, and psychology all fulfill GE requirements in the Science and Engineering area. Good news for people who hate math.

Also to add on to Phishy and cutie, AP tests still give credits, so they aren’t entirely worthless…:)

Those subjects are primarily SocSci though (and Psych doesn’t count for SciEng at all, just SocSci), so you’ll have to make sure that the classes you choose give credit for SciEng and not SocSci.

Yes. Acceptable AP scores will award you units towards graduation (but not towards the unit cap) and allow you to skip prereqs.

Your 4 will give you eight units of credit for HIS 17A/B. Thus, you cannot take these classes to fulfill GE requirements.

The AP breakdown is this:
Not all UC’s do this, in fact we seem to be unusual in this regard. However, we also have a LOT less GE requirements than other UC’s that allow you to use AP’s for GE’s. It’s kind of galling at first, but in the end GE’s aren’t all that bad. They seem to be a nice buffer for your GPA.

1) AP classes can count as a pre-req. Say you want to take Calc B as a GE or even as a class for your major instead of starting with A. The pre-req is Calc A, but Calc A is satisfied by a 5(?) on the AB test or a 4 on the BC test. Awesome so you can take Calc B first go. The catch is that you have still only taken ONE GE course, not 2.

2) AP Clases ROCK at getting you an EARLIER TIME TO REGISTER!!! You will loveeeee having AP credits come pass-time, I swear.

3) Also, appropiate AP scores in calc and english will allow you to skip the placement exams at orientation.

4) Lastly. You probably wouldn’t have gotten in without those AP’s anyways, so just let it go
