From what I've heard, if you do not take the SAT II for math, they automatically put you in Math 231? I'm in Calc BC right now, and I'll probably pass the AP Exam with a 3 or above (my teacher has a 3 year streak of 4's and above and she had a 4.8 average last year). I'm pretty confident I can pass the AP exam, and I really don't want to go through another SAT. So the question is, do I have to take the SAT IIs?

bump, anyone got any responses?

You should probably ask that question to the Admitted Students forum. Still, from what I head at one of the sessions at UNC, all students are required to take the SAT II Math.

Another Sat. wasted. Lovin' it.

if your teachers got a 4.8 streak, take it either way. Even if its not required, Math SAT IIs look pretty good. And it sounds like you have a fair shot of doing well... I know its another SAT, but welcome to the misery that is applying to college.

best of luck :)

If you excel at math i would not waste my time and just bank on the AP to get your placement. What it means is that if you go to early CTOPS you will not be able to register for math. If you take it the HIGHEST you can get into is a math 231 which is one of the classes you exempt with a cal bc good performance. My D decided it was a waste of time bc she exempted 231 adn 232 with the AP. She had to register for 231 at ctops so ...she had to drop it anyway.

670 and above on the math II test will only get you INTO math 231 cal 1. NO higher. HOWEVER, unless you are very good in math....you may need that if you bomb the AP cal.

Make sense?

so if you take the AB Calc and get a 3,4, or 5 its the same as getting a 670 on the math II test?

Also do i have to take Calc as one of the general requirements at UNC?

I do not know about AP Cal AB, my D took BC.
I know she took the placement test SAT II Math II as requested and all that got her was a placement INTO cal 1 math 231 at unc.
You should consult the general catalog for general requirements for math....as there was a math 117 she exempted as well but i do not know what that is.

For some courses the SAT scores if high enough may exempt you from requirements.....such as basic eng courses and maybe lower math....consult the site for the most up to date info.

Many different majors have requirements in the gen college, such as a BS track may have more science and math than a BA track...and certainly a Math track would require those higher levels.

It is rather complicated so be safe. check thoroughly before you miss a registration to take the sat II. I will say that D 1 did not take the SAT II and seemed to fair ok with it all but is NOT a math/science major. D2 took it, it got her nothing but her AP cal BC did. SOOOO.... use the unc site for your best information or call the advising office and ask about general req. The first year handbook spells it out pretty thoroughly as a first stop.

I think if you get a 2 on the AP Calc exam you're exempted from the SAT II Math II.

Is the Math 1 OK to take

I think it has to be Math II but I'm not sure.
