I've lived in the US for ten years and I am completely fluent. All the applications I've read tells me that I have to take the TOEFL if English isn't my first language. I think I remember someone saying that if you score above a 500 in the SAT Verbal, you don't have to take it. Is this true?? Please help, any answer would be appreciated!

If your fluent dont take it.

My friend who is chinese moved here 11 years ago, and got 800 on verbal on his SAT's.... I doubt hes going to be rejected from harvard because he didnt take toefl.

usually it's optional and can be substituted in place of verbal...but if ur verbal is above 650 i don't think u need to take it.

all of my apps say its required if English isn't my first language...should i contact each school?

i think what they mean by english being not your primary languages. Theres millions of people who move to america when they are under 6 or 7, and they barely remember there first language. None of them took Toefl , the test is designed to see if you know enough English to do well in college, if you did well on SAT's obviously you do. Do you have an English sounding accent or do you sound foriegn? When you call them up, they'll probbaly base whether you should take the test on that.

If you've lived in US for 10 years, that must mean you were around 7 - 8 years old when you first came here, right? Most (if not all) of my friends that came here at that young of age have forgotten their mother language, thus, speaking English as if it were their first language.

yeah, i speak English much better than Korean...thanx for the help!

basically taking it would be pointless, and colleges arent going to care nor notice the least bit.

You should definitely call the admissions office and double check, just to be safe.
