Do I have to take the TOEFL?

My second language is English. BUT I'm a US citizen, attend high school in America (lived here most of my life), and English is my best language as of now.
Do I need to take the TOEFL?

I can’t imagine you would. Here’s one example:

What are your CR&W scores on your SAT?

Each college and university sets its own policy about this. You really do need to ask each one.

I haven’t taken the SAT yet.

First, check to see if the Harvard Summer Program requires the TOEFL. It might, it might not. If it does, then were you educated in English? In other words, are the classes you’ve taken in high school taught in English? If they are, then you don’t need to take the TOEFL. If they were taught in Burmese, then you do.

samuelarnold,

You are correct that in MOST cases, there will be a verbal ACT or SAT score and/or a certain number of years in schools where English is the medium of instruction will be taken as evidence of proficiency in English. However, as each institution does set its own policy, any applicant who has a different first or home language really has to read the websites very carefully. Over the years, students who speak a different language in their homes have posted here at CC that they have been required to submit results of the TOEFL or other English proficiency examinations at some particular colleges and universities even though all of their education has been in English. I regret that I didn’t get the names of those institutions. I personally know one student who was automatically required to take the non-native version of her college’s English placement exams despite being adopted from an orphanage by her US family at age four and having no conscious recollection of her first language.

OK, thanks everyone  I’ll check individual colleges
