Do I have to take the TOEFL?

English isn’t my native language but I’m fluent. I’ve been to British schools in France and Kenya for 3 years each, where the main language is English. I’m taking the SAT in October but I’ve heard that I should do the TOEFL as well. Is there any point in doing it, or will i be fine with just the SAT?

Depends on the school to which you’re applying. Some will insist on the TOEFL, others will give you a pass based on your SAT. Check websites of the schools you’re interested in and, if still uncertain, send them an email.

Are you a U.S. citizen? If so, TOEFL isn’t required. If not, it would be safe to take it because some schools would eventually require it. I took it even though I’m fluent because English isn’t my native language.

Are you in your final year of school or do you have another year to go? If you are a senior, how are you testing on the SAT in your practice tests?

If you’re in the 50% mid range of the profile for the schools you’re looking at, then you’re probably ok, but it wouldn’t hurt to take the TOEFL as it’s another way to show your command of English and remove that questions from an AdComm reviewing your application. Some schools also have minimums for the requirement to be waived for students applying. Check in with the admissions offices.

If you’re not a senior, see how you do on the Oct administration and then determine if you’re meeting those targets or may need to retake the SAT a couple more time to feel comfortable or you can take the TOEFL to help boost your prospects.

Not always true. If one is a US citizen living in a non-English speaking country and attending HS where English is not the language of instruction, one might still need to take TOEFL. TOEFL policies are specific to the individual university, and the policies all across the board. You need to check college by college to see what’s required.

I’m in my last year of school, not a US citizen and I took the SAT in October and got 690 on the Reading and Writing section. I’m not planning on taking it again, though. I’ve looked up the TOEFL requirements for the colleges I’m applying to and only 2 colleges require it, so I’m going to take it in December. Thanks for the help

You dont have to take it if you graduated from a high school in the U.S.

Once again, not always true. If a college gives an exemption for TOEFL for graduation from a US HS, it’s usually based upon attending US HS’s for 4 years, not simply graduating from one. Again, one would need to check with each college.

Regardless, it does not apply to the OP, who stated that s/he attended schools in France and Kenya for the past 3 years.
