While going over some college websites, I noticed that they require everyone who doesn't have English as their first language to take the TOEFL. I ran into this for the first time and it worried me, because English isn't my first language.

I wasn't born in USA but Ive been living in USA for 8 years and Ive technically lived almost half of my life here, and been going to school here ever since I came.

My SAT CR score is 640, and Ive been taking AP English for 2 years with all As. I mean, I speak better and write better than half the native people at my school so I don't see why I should be forced to pay buttload of money and take a retarded test that majority of the native speakers cant even pass.

same here! oh well i’ve been here for only 3.5 yrs, but i am now taking AP Eng. and I did pretty well in all my Eng classes in the past 3 yrs (all As and one B+), and have a good GPA, i don’t understand why the schools still want me to take the TOEFL. (You need to pay like $170 to take the test )

Yeah well my worry is that it maybe too late if I really have to take it, since its December 11 already and apps are due in JAN 1, and I have NO CLUE at all about what the TOEFL is and how its taken and what the content is, I dont even know the test dates.

If I really have to take it, then that is SOME bullcrap.

A candidate from a US High school is not required to take TOFEL or that is my understanding. TOFEL is not required for graduates from some countries such as Canada. Check with the school you are applying

here is the UNC Chapel Hill policy for TOFEL (if you graduate from a US high school you do not have to)

Students currently attending a school where English is not the
language of instruction or students for whom English is not their first language are required to submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

It really depends on universities. Some univs do require international applicants to take TOEFL, but for some univs, TOEFL is ONLY required for international students who didn’t go to English schools for past five years. Also, international students can submit their SAT verbal scores instead of TOEFL scores for some colleges.

You need to carefully read the website of every single college and university that you are applying to and read the specific policy about TOEFL/IELTS/other English exams.

If you can’t figure out what the website means, pick up the telephone and call the admissions office.
