Do I have to tell a university I'm not going there?

Transfer student here. I want to know (besides the school I’m planning to SIR to) if I have to tell all the other schools I applied to that I’m not going to attend? Or will they get the memo after they see i didn’t do an SIR. I applied to both UC’s and CSU’s. Thanks!

I think it’s the polite thing to do. You can copy and paste the same message to a bunch of emails; it will take less than 10 minutes.

I agree with @bjkmom, while you don’t need to tell other schools I do think that it is the polite thing to do.

As one example, my younger daughter a year ago was offered very good merit scholarships at several schools. After she picked one and told them she was coming, she told the others that she was not coming. This in general might allow the schools to offer the scholarships to someone else. While this doesn’t affect us, it does open up the possibility of allowing some stressed out high school senior somewhere to get some very good news a bit sooner than they would have otherwise.

Universities do “overbook” and accept somewhat more students than then expect to enroll, knowing that some students will go elsewhere. However, if enough students tell them that they will go elsewhere, then this might allow them to accept someone else a bit sooner. Remember that your safety is someone else’s dream.

It depends.

If you’ve sent in an enrollment deposit, then it is required.

If you’ve had no correspondence with them other than sending an app and getting accepted, and it’s a school that accepts a couple thousand transfers every round, it’s nice of you, but they’ll get the message if you never respond and the deadline passes. This is different if it’s like a small or more selective school though, where you’re literally one of twenty. In that case, they know your name, and they know who you are. It’s the right thing to do to tell them thanks but no thanks. They’ll probably reach out to you if you don’t reach out to them.
