Do i have to tell colleges that im not enrolling?

Ive decided on a school and was wondering if i need to tell the other schools i was accepted to that i will not enroll. What will happen if i just dont say anything and send nothing back by May 1st?

It is best if you tell the colleges that you are not enrolling. It will only take a few minutes to do an email, and if you ever want to transfer, you will at least appear polite. Besides, the earlier the college knows, the earlier they can start accepting from their waitlist.

It would take you less than five minutes to inform them and most have the option to decline right on their website. You don’t HAVE to, but why not?

My son received notification of an additional $4500 merit scholarship last week. He wrote back as soon as his decision to go elsewhere was finalized so that the award could be handed out to another worthy student (perhaps still on the fence), well before the May 1st deadline.

If you don’t respond by the deadline, most schools will certainly allow a grace period for late mail arrival and processing. In the meantime, some poor fellow student still sits on a waitlist and hopes for admission. Do the right thing, not for the school’s sake but for your anxious fellow students.

It’s common courtesy. When you mail out your wedding invitations one day, you’ll see how annoyed you get at the people who don’t RSVP and you have to spend time tracking them down for a yes/no answer.

It’s the polite thing to do.
