Do I have to transfer my credits?

I have about 1 semester worth of community college credits and may be moving and transferring to another community college. I failed one class and wouldn’t like it transferred if it will negatively affect my transcript for transfer into a 4 year University after I complete my associates. Do I have to transfer my credits? Can I choose not to disclose this information and start anew? Will school #1 show up when I register again with my social security number?

You will need to show your existing community college credits when you apply to a 4 year university. Universities and community colleges have a way to share information, and they all know about each other.

The past is the past. Universities know that people are not perfect. Work hard to do very well at your new community college. If you can pull off a year or two of strong grades then schools will see that you have learned how to study and how to do well.

Regardless of whether you transfer the credit to the next community college, you will have to report all college course work from all colleges attended to the four year schools that you eventually apply to. Yes, that includes sending transcripts from all colleges attended when sending transcripts is needed.

If you are going to apply for financial aid or pursue an Associates degree, you will need to give the new CC your first CC transcript. Whether any of the credits transfer for credit will be entirely up to them.

If you pay for all of your classes without financial aid, and don’t enroll as a degree candidate, and just take classes in non-degree status at the second CC, then they might not require you to give them the first CC’s transcript.

When you apply for transfer to a 4-year institution, you will need to provide all of your transcripts. Again, whether any of the credits transfer will be entirely up to them.

No, you have to disclose it. Every college you apply to requires you to list all previous colleges attended and to submit a transcript. Furthermore there is a National Student database recording every college you have attended. When you go to another CC they may or may not check the database (likely they will, and the law requires them to check if you get financial aid) but you can bet that a 4-year will check. If you don’t tell them they will revoke your admission and prohibit you from reapplying.

Failing a class isn’t the end of the world. If you retake it then most colleges replace the grade when calculating your gpa for admission. Furthermore they will take your later work as more indicative of your performance than something that happened your 1st semester in college.
