Hi. I'm a sophomore currently, and enrolled in 2 AP classes. I've been taking advanced classes literally since the beginning of junior high, but now it's starting to hit me how hard this actually is. My top choice is Stanford. I have a 3.85 gpa currently, and am planning to take 6 AP classes junior year, and 5 AP's senior year, which totals up to about 13. I'm taking nearly all the AP science classes, and all the advanced math classes (including AP calc & statistics). I'm enrolled in a couple of clubs, but I'm also thinking about starting my own. I'd really like to go into the medical field, and I've already had an internship at a dentistry office over the summer of freshman year. When I turn 16, I plan to start volunteering at a hospital. I'm participating in Relay for Life this year, and plan to do so throughout my high school career. I'm also in a community youth group, and I'm a varsity swimmer (hopefully captain by senior year). I took the mock SAT's and got a 1900, which is pretty low, but I think I'll be able to get it up with more preparation. With all this in mind, do you think I have what it takes to get into Stanford? I know all the top schools look for people that have something special about them, like a hook, and I'm not sure if that's me. I really want to do everything that I can to get in :/

I’m not a professional chancer so don’t take my reply to heart. You’re GPA is good, but everyone at Stanford had that GPA, but most had higher. You haven’t really gone into your extracurriculars, so I don’t know. Stanford is am amazing school and has a lot of qualified applicants.

Your GPA is a little low and your SAT is currently low, but like OP said the biggest issue I see is your ECs. You have no ECs that make you stand out and minimal leadership and community service. Obviously things can change between now and when you apply, but with where you are currently your chances are not great. Remember that everybody applying to Stanford has great numbers, so then it comes down to essays, ECs and recommendations…

I’ll start with the disclaimer that no one here can really chance you for Stanford with such a simple description. Getting into Stanford goes well beyond good grades and test scores. But, the following could hurt you

-Weak ECs. Most people who go to Stanford have leadership positions or research at a prestigious institution.
-Lower than average test scores.

You need a strong couple of ECs for you to have a good chance. Your GPA and test scores are relatively average for Stanford applicant. You need something to make you stand out. Fortunately, you have time. Good luck!

well right now I’m only a sophomore so I still got 2 and a half years till college, and I plan to start doing more. So continue getting straight A’s, and increase my extracurriculars?

Basically, but remember that colleges basically only see what you do through the end of junior year…
