Do I have what it takes?

Alright so Northeastern is my first choice school and I've already applied EA. I am really curious of whether or not I've got a shot. Honestly, I imaine I do, but I'm not sure.
The thing is, unlike seemingly everyone else here (4.33 gpa uw and 2250+), my marks are rather...may I say normal?
CR 590 M 630 WR 690 = 1910
3.47 gpa
2 years Student Ambassador
All honors classes. 3 AP junior year. 3 AP senior year.
4 years Marching band. Low Brass Section Leader / All Brass Leader
2 years of fall and spring pit band (trombone and bass)
3 jazz bands in 2 years (1 recurring). Trombone soloist
3 years of track: 2 JV, 1 V
1 year of V Cross Country (no, not because I'm a senior. Some seniors got JV letters)
Plenty of athletic community service: like volunteering at the philadelphia marathon, and helping train little kids (Kindergarten+) every Sunday for 2 months.

Now, here's where I believe my chances add up even a bit more. When I visited the campus last month, I had a little personal discussion with the admissions counselor. He specifically stated 4 characteristics which the school looks for in an applicant: leadership, entrepreneurship, resilience, and persistence. I had my guidance counselor structure her letter of rec around these 4 points and I casually tossed a bit of into my common app essay.

Well, thanks for volunteering to be hit by this brick of text. Any feedback would be great.

You have a pretty good chance :)

Wow a much more positive response than I was accepting. Thank you, friend! But I should still consider the school a short, if not moderate reach, yes?

I’d say you have a moderate to a more likely chance but thats just my opinion. I applied EA too and Northeastern usually accepts around 4 students from my school of a class of around 180ish. This being said I know as many as 15 other students who applied to Northeastern who I wouldn’t think stand a chance. Whether its because they don’t take hard classes, have no extracurriculars or their SAT/ACT scores are way worse than mine and I only got a 27 on my ACTs  Regardless the kids that usually post on college confidential are usually around the top 10% of students in the country (because they care about their academics and if they didn’t they wouldn’t be posting their stats). All in all I think you stand a better chance than most of the kids I know applying. Don’t get your hopes down because you see incredible stats on this website, its just a very small percent of the kids applying and they will most likely be in the Honors Program or will end up going to top tier schools or ivys and are just using NEU as their safety. Lastly, would you happen to know your class rank? (Weighted rank as I know Northeastern looks at your weighted gpa and weighted rank and recalculates your rigorous classes so they are worth even more) Who applies from your school also might make the difference between your chances as well. Good Luck and hopefully I will see you at northeastern next year!!

P.S whats your intended major?? that could be a factor too lol

I imagine ill see you around campus! But Yea I happened to discover this website by chance, and not just to ask about applications, but I saw everyone else doing it so I took the opportunity!
Well my class rank is something strange because I transferred high schools between sophomore and junior year. At my old school, weighted class rank, I was like number 55 of 290 cumulatively. Now at my current school, I am perplexed, because I was told I was number 117 of like 330. This however, is unweighted. So I really don’t know where id stand cumulatively now.
Oh and my intended major is chemistry without pre-med.

I would say you have a pretty good shot! Chances are you’ve already looked at this, but <a href=“Northeastern University: Acceptance Rate, SAT/ACT Scores, GPA”>http://collegeapps.about.com/od/GPA-SAT-ACT-Graphs/ss/northeastern-university-admission-gpa-sat-act.htm</a> this website has a scatterplot of GPA/SAT scores and whether students are accepted, and you appear to be well within range. You have great EC’s. If your Critical Reading score was 20-30 points higher, I would say you are in without a doubt, but even without that I don’t think you need to be worried!

I think you are low reach because, as you said, slightly low GPA and SAT’s, but with all your extra curricular’s, you have a good chance at getting in.

Wow this is great thanks a lot you guys. Should I send a resume? They sa a resume is recommended but I never sent one because I don’t know how. I’m only wondering because I was recently named varsity but put jv when I applied and I’m thinking I should make the adjustment in my file. But uhh should I? Does it matter? Or can you simply change it in the common app?

i sent my resume in the additional information section on the common app but if you already applied you cant do that now. However I’ve emailed admission directors numerous times and they were very supportive and helped alot. Just go to the website and find an email and send any additional information to them. I sent an additional rec, my first quarter report card, as well as them making a note on my file that I was named First Team All-Division in soccer. Anything to help get in as its my number one school lol

Interesting. I just might do that. Is there a certain counselor/director that you emailed? I sent an email in early october to Mr. Russo but I’m honestly not quite sure if he’s the appropriate one to send to

I don’t really think it matters, originally I was emailing the director who I thought was in charge of the applications for my state, but then at the end of the 2011/2012 it changed and I didn’t realize it and the same admission director kept handling all my paper work and just forwarded it to the new director. I think you will be set who ever you send it to they are pretty helpful lol

Varied responses – anyone else wanna chime in?

I’d say you’re a low match, your SAT scores are good, but your gpa is a little low. Extracurriculars are good! It’s really hard to say who they’ll accept, it’s getting tougher and tougher each year. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I sent an email asking if I should mail a resume. After never getting a response, I just mailed it (postage) because my counselor said it would be alright. Here’s hoping i didnt make a mistake.

Final pre-decision-release bump. Any last thoughts? I won’t bother any of this page again

You will get in! 100%…

thank you. Ill stop pestering the page now. Though your elipses do suggest more…

Are those the criteria for business students or everyone? I don’t see why they would evaluate the entrepreneurship of a non-business major…

Well by entrepreneurship, they really mean it in the sense of risk or ambition, such as taking a lot of hard classes, or pursuing a largely complex resume.

Does applying EA give you a higher chance at a scholarship? I am applying regular and I’m worried they will “run out” of scholarships.
