do i need a bike at Northwestern?

I'm going to northwestern next fall. not sure if i should take my bike with me or just leave it for sale. is the campus small enough to just walk?

It really doesn't seem that big so I don't think it's unreasonable to walk, but I think that I'm going to bring my bike.

Yes, it's walkable. But you were at the north side of the campus and want to go to downtown, it'd take you 20 mins to walk instead of 5 mins with a bike. So you'd save half hour back and fro.

Also, it's really nice to ride your bike along the lakefront; it's one of my favorite things to do during the fall/spring. I even rode my bike to Chicago before.

Having a bike at NU is:

Often very useful

Definitely not necessary

Great in the warm weather

A burden in the winter (especially regarding storage)

Do with that what you will.

dlfeish said it perfectly.

I thought there was a shuttle service...also since winter is the longest at NU, I think it will be better not to have a bike...

Actually the fall quarter is the longest at Northwestern. I would recommend a bike if you live on North campus. The shuttle runs in a north (clockwise?) direction at night. While it is not a necessity, it is nice to explore the lakefront with a bike. The school keeps bike storages during the winter.

Yes but the shuttle system at NU is abhorrent. Don't bank on it for getting you to class on time.

Having a bike on campus is very useful. Personally I think walking from one side of campus to the other is a pain in the butt (Bobb to Fisk Hall? Shoot me now...) and a waste of time. You can ride a bike in the winter when it is not snowing, so I highly suggest bringing one if it's convenient.

speaking of bikes, do they often get stolen in NU? people steal bikes all the time in my brother's college, so i wonder if it's the same here?

Get a good lock, and you'll be fine. My seat got stolen, which was really annoying, but the old seat was really bad. I stole a seat off a derelict bike to replace it and it was much better. (Derelict as in with a police impound notice on it).

Like everyone has said it really depends on if you live up north or down south and where the majority of your classes are going to take place. I would say that's the determining factor. My me, I lived down south but worked up north and having a bike was great.

Storage -- itreally isn't an issue. Buy a crappy bike that can be left out all winter --that's what I did.

Locking -- this is essential. Buy what is called a "U-Lock". They can be purchased at the police station for something cheap like five bucks. Otherwise they can cost upwards of 25.00

Scheduling -- even if you have a bike it's pretty useless in the winter so just try to schedule classes nearby if you can. Sometimes a 15 minute walk in below zero is unavoidable though. =/
