Do I need a new f-1 visa if I have been out of the states for more than 5 months?

Hello,

I used to be a student at Arizona State University in 2012-2013 for two semesters until I got disqualified. So, I went back to my home country and I have been here for more than 5 months so far. Now, I want to get back to the US to go to a community college to get my grades up than go back to ASU. So, I received my new I-20 with a new SEVIS number and I activated it by paying the SEVIS fees.

My question is, do I need a new f-1 visa if I have been out of the states for more than 5 months? Keep in mind my VISA is still valid for the next 3-4 years.

Thanks,

Your visa is tied to your SEVIS record. If you got a new I-20 with a new SEVIS number, you will need to apply for a new visa as well.

(FWIW, my undergraduate college routinely warned all international students that they might have to apply for a new visa if they study abroad.)

Thanks man for your reply. I just heard if I got a new I-20 with a new SEVIS number that all I have to do is to pay the SEVIS fees again to activate it and I will be good.
