We called that chemistry lite. I don’t think that will fulfill your medical school prerequisite requirement. I think you need to be prepared to take the regular chem course sequence in college…if medical school is in your future.
@thumper1
Out of all the schools I’ve seen, NYU was the school that I truly felt like I had to be there. But NYU aside and colleges aside for that matter, I just truly love to learn, I don’t care if I may start off at a disadvantage I try to work as hard as I can . So in reality as long as I’m learning I dont really care what college I go to, medical school is a different story, it’s just that out of all the colleges, NYU fits best for me.
NYU’s chemistry sequence for prehealth starting with CHEM-UA 125 and 126 lists high school chemistry as a prerequisite. There is also an honors/advanced version for students with AP chemistry 5 scores (127 and 128), and an accelerated version (129). But it is likely that many pre-meds with AP chemistry 5 scores take 125 and 126 for what they think will be “easy A” grades.
@ucbalumnus
Alright, let us say I didn’t take chemistry in high school, in college I would need to take: into to chem with lab, general chem 1 with lab, general chem 2 with lab, organic chem 1 with lab, organic chem 2 with lab if I’m correct? Each course is one semester right? I will have enough time to do it and fulfill med school requirements?
Actually I’m just curious in general. What courses should one take in college in order to go to medical school?
@thumper1
My problem is that I know what courses to take for medical school. Some courses for example in NYU if I want to take chem 2 i need calculus 1 and if I want calculus 1 I need to take other math courses in addition. I just want to make sure that I have enough time to take all of these courses you know what I mean?
Your focus needs to get into college. Med school requirements can wait. That said, every med school will require general and organic chemistry. Many, although not all, will require calculus. So if in addition to not having chem, you will not have, at the very minimum, precalc, you’re waaaay behind the 8 ball, and you really need to be strengthening your HS preparation (and your SAT score) before worrying about med school.
@MarMarBunny02 - you keep saying “have enough time to take all of these courses”, but in what context? Your 4-years college time? Many pre-meds are taking gap years these days.
Generally speaking, 1st year=Bio+lab & Gen Chem+lab; 2nd year= Org Chem+lab, 3rd year=Biochem+lab & Physics+lab. So you should be done by junior year with most pre-med required science courses.
@Andorvw
Thank you. I’m just a little worried because for some of the courses you mentioned, there are prerequisites which I also need to take in college.
@skieurope
Thank you. I have alot of courses to catch up on for college but I will focus on high school. I may not have pre calculus and I will probably only end up doing 1 semester of chemistry but I don’t think I am “behind the 8 ball” as you mentioned. I was delt with some not so favourable cards and I’m trying my best. I’m very new to this.
Well, to my earlier point, first you need to get a 670 on the math portion, and then you need to get accepted to NYU. Other college policies will differ on what is needed before enrolling in Calc 1.
To do pre-med in college, you have to take Chemistry in college.
Almost all students who take Chemistry in college have taken Chemistry or Honor Chemistry in HS. Some make take Honor Chem and/or AP Chemistry.
It is always very very good to get initial exposure to a topic when possible in HS before you take it in college.
If you must do this, then make sure to get a tutor right away and watch Khan Academy Videos on Chemistry topics and go to Professor office hours.
@bopper
Alright thank you. I’m going to finish my 1 semester of chemistry, would you recommend I do chemistry 2 so that way I have one year of chemistry or should I try one year online chem one year online pre cal?
Are you saying you won’t have done precalc in high school either.
Also, can you pay the full over $70,000 a year to attend NYU…without loans.
Do you have siblings who also will attend college after you? Can your family pay the costs for all?
If you are considering medical school, you want no or very little undergrad college debt.
At this point, you need to work with what you currently have for college admissions. For NYU you need to raise your SAT…so good luck on your retake.
From what you are writing here, it’s not just chemistry that you are lacking. If you won’t have taken even pre calculus, you will have some math catching up to do too.
Have you considered a post grad year after high school? Many prep schools offer these and you could take these lacking courses.
@MYOS1634
In my previous school I took 2 years of the highest level physics given, I have a o level in physics. My junior year at my current school (American community schools Greece), i took biology 9 that way i could take ib biology next year. I will be taking ib psychology as well and I will take the ap exams for both. I wanted to take chemistry but it did not fit into my schedule, same with ib math which is really frustrating. I started 1 semester of online chem but I didnt know if I should complete that and move on to chem 2 or instead of chem 2, do online pre cal for 1 semester.
You’ll need a full year of HS chemistry in order to enroll in CHEM 125. You won’t allowed to enroll in the class without it.
If you plan to enroll in CHEM 126 second semester, you must take calc 1 in the fall.
To be successful in calc, you’ll need some particular math skills. Do you have experience with vectors? Trig functions? Linear & polynominal functions? Polar coordinates? Unless you have a firm foundation in these skills, calc is going to be extremely difficult for you. And NYU will have killer competition, including kids who have taken AP/IB Calc already.
Can you list all 4 years of classes following the prompts below and indicating if they’re O’Level, IB SL, IB HL, Honors, regular; indicate ONLY classes taken freshman year through junior year + planned schedule senior year.
Example:
English = English O’Levels1, English O’Levels 2, Junior English Regular; Senior: Senior English Honors.
English =
Math =
Social Science/History =
Foreign language(s) =
Science =
HS requirements =
Electives, personal picks =
What other O’Levels did you take (beside Physics)?
What grades did you get (A-G/U or 1-9)?
Right now, NYU doesn’t seem within reach at all. If you’re interested in NYC, there are other colleges there. Or if you like big cities in the US, there are colleges in lots of big cities, not to mention awesome college towns…
Are you in Greece right now or in the US for the summer?
I have an o level in math, I took paper B which is easier. I have an o level in physics as I said level A. O level in English literature and lang level A, o level in home economics level A, O level in French level B. Might be missing one, don’t remember my exact grades but I did really well.
My junior year I had to take 3 lower grade classes in order to fulfill graduation requirements: biology 9, american studies lit and history. I wanted to take honors but there was summer work that I was not informed of. Ib theater hl, Greek 4 and the rest were electives. Finished with a 4.133 gpa.
Senior year I will take ib psychology hl, ib biology hl, ib history sl, ib theater hl, ib eng lit hl + 1 semester chemistry 1 and 1 semester health in order to graduate and Greek 5. I will be taking the ap exams for all of the in courses my senior year
