Do I Need SAT II's? Never heard of them

Will I need to take any SAT II's for college admissions ?I have never heard of them and no one has ever mentioned them to me. I plan on applying to Michigan Ann Arbor, Ohio State, and a couple of other lower Tier 1 schools. There isn't any mention of it on their websites but someone just told me I should think about taking them. Should I and what is the purpose? This is all new to me. someone help

If you are applyng to top 30 schools, they are pretty much required. Other places, what they do is show that you are very smart in a particular subject and assuming you do well and they are related to your intended major, can only help. They are by no means required after the top 30 schools, so it won’t hurt not having them.

And as to not start a flame war, I do know UMich is a top 25 schoo, but I don’t believe they need SAT IIs right?

I am NOT digging the Colleboard.com’s website. Every time I try to click on Subject Tests (SAT IIs)…I get a page that seems to ONLY talk about the SAT I.

So I’ll asume you’ve done your own research in knowing that you do not need them. Some schools DO require them, and that is stated in their application requirements. So, if your schools don’t want them, then of course you don’t have to do them. If you do feel you’ll be very proficient in an area of study that might correlate to your major…you could consider taking one or more anyway. Beware though that, if you don’t do well…some colleges will require that you send the score anyway. They’re offered in a variety of subjects (math, language, foreign language, sciences). Wish I had a link for you - but check out college board until you can find the information/description. There are also threads here at CC…Lots of test prep questions, you can learn a lot there.I forget the name of the section.

Go to this page of the Common App website and click on Documents and Requirements" PDF https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/DownloadForms.aspx</a></p>

This is a great, comprehensive list of the schools that require or recommend SAT IIs. I was surprised at how FEW schools require them. (Of course, for schools that don’t accept the Common App you’ll have to check each school’s website.)

The ENITRE UC system requires two of them. However, this will be phased out starting with applications for the HS class of 2012.

Yea I’ve done heavy research into all of my top schools (Michigan-Ann Arobr, Ohio State, UIUC, U of Wisconsin. etc.) and I’ve never seen anything about SAT II or subject tests (are those the same thing?). I’ve been pretty anal about researching and doing everything I need to have a good chance at admissions and when my teacher randomly said take some SAT II’s a freaked out because I had just got a great score on the ACT and wanted to put my standardized test phase in the past.

SAT I = Reasoning, SAT II = Subject Tests…I recommend that you take at least two. That way, you’ll have scores to submit if your prospective colleges require them.

You should also take the tests in the subjects that you are best at or have in interest in majoring in. (ie, take english if you are interested in majoring in english or take the microbio exam if you’re interested in majoring in bio)

Some schools that want SAT-IIs will accept ACT in lieu of both SAT-I and SAT-II, because the ACT gives subject scores in science, math, and English.

OP, If you have gone to the admissions webpages for your colleges and have not seen SAT II/SAT Subject tests listed as required for application, then you don’t need them. For instance, UMichigan:

[Office of Undergraduate Admissions: Requirements](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/prospective/prospectivefreshmen/requirements.php)

If it isn’t explicitly stated as required, then it isn’t.

I know for a fact that none of the schools I’m looking into require them, but some of those schools are close to being very selective and I was wondering if there are many kids who are sending these scores in (like applicants for Michigan) but I guess if there isn’t any data at all about applicants and their SAT II’s for those colleges, then maybe I should stop worrying (wow did I really just answer my own thread)

Michigan went from not looking at them at all to “considering” IIs if submitted last year but it does not require them (and most applicants do not submit them). All public unversities except the UCs do not require SAT IIs (Virginia recommends them). UCs require two SAT IIs but that requirement will be dropped beginning 2012. Also true of publics is that almost all of them won’t consider IIs if sent (the reviewers won’t even see them if you send them). For a fairly accurate list of colleges that require, recommend or consider SAT IIs go here: <a href=“SAT Subject Test Requirements and Recommendations - Compass Education Group”>SAT Subject Test Requirements and Recommendations - Compass Education Group; Also as you look at the list and columns on that site, the ones in the “required” column which show a number with an * next to the number means that particular college accepts the ACT in lieu of both the SAT and SAT IIs.

I filled out half of the applications for both OSU and UMich. They don’t require SAT IIs.
