I am a junior in High School. USC is my first choice, by far, as both my parents went there, as well as my uncle... I know the requirement is only 2 years of foreign language, but I need to know if I should continue with Spanish 3. I will either get a B or a C, both of which will cause my GPA to drop, because I really do not do well with the subject. My GPA is a little below the USC average (I have a 3.6), but I do very well on standardized tests (34 on ACT, have not gotten results of PSAT, but I have always done well on similar tests). If it matters, I am going for a Computer Science major.

Yes 3 Years of language is like minimum for top schools. You must try to get B or better. A 'C' will hurt your chances though... so if you think you can get at least a 'B' then go for it. Nowadays, it's really difficult to get into a top university doing minimum work.

I know the said minimun @ SC is two though... how much will it hurt?

Keep in mind that if you do get into USC you'll have to take 3 semesters of a foreign language.

"Keep in mind that if you do get into USC you'll have to take 3 semesters of a foreign language."

Well, that kind of depends on where you "test in" at orientation. My daughter has to take just one semester of Level 3 Spanish, which she's doing now, and she's done.

That is a strong reason to continue with Spanish in H.S., you will likely do better on USC's placement test and free up room in your schedule that you'd otherwise have to spend meeting USC's language requirement for graduation.

Okay, thanks... But the big thing now is getting in.

I don't think that your chance of getting in would decrease w/ 2 years of spanish versus 3. I was just thinking that you might as well take as much spanish in HS so you have a better chance of skipping part or all the the requirement.

Ok, thanks for your responses.

But then again, you might not even have a foreign language requirement, depending on your major.

There is one... but it's like one semester or something short.

I thought CS majors had to have 3 semesters of a language.

They do... I guess... but I just looked it up. Since I am going for the video game emphasis, they waive the foreign language requirement (in college) altogether.

I don't think it'll be too big of a deal if you only have 2 years.

My opinion is that a C in the class will hurt your chances a great deal more than 1 less year of foreign language.

I personally did poorly in two years of French (C's) in freshman and sophomore yr. and then took one year of German (A's both semesters) my Junior year.

no need to take the risk of hurting your gpa. 2 year of foreign language is fine

Oh, I didn't realize that CS-games had diff reqs. Well, in that case, no real reason to take Spanish

Ok. Thanks everyone.

No, thank YOU for facilitating my procrastination!

What do you mean?
