Do I need statistics for med school?

I already took both AP Calc AB and BC, satisfying gen ed and biochem major math requirements. I signed up for statistics and have just started it, although I am questioning now whether that was a good idea, because many med schools don't require it. I don't know what I would take instead because I basically finished gen eds though AP credits. I am taking ochem this sem and am a freshman if that matters.

Different medical schools have different pre-reqs. Some medical schools do require statistics. You should consult the MSAR to see which schools do.

However, the 2015 MCAT will include statistics questions in the human behavior, biologicla sciences and physical sciences sections. So for that reason, you probably need to take a semester of stats.

Any general thoughts about pros/cons of taking statistics from math dept v statistics from say psych dept?

My D. had to take one math, she had only 1 AP credit, she just needed another math credit.
She took college Stats. According to her, it made sense for 2 reasons. She has been involved with Med. Research back in HS and for 3 years in college. She said that Stats finally made her understand Medical Research procedures much better. Another reason was that it was a very easy A, not much work at all.
If one does not need more math credits, then you either take it or not. If you need to boost your GPA, then it is a very good class to take. D. did not need to get her GPA higher, but she had to work extremely hard in some classes to get her A. The A in Stats was probably her easiest.

Some of the schools in Texas that currently require Stats list specific approved classes in each University.

"STATISTICS

The following schools require 3 semester hrs (5 quarter hrs) of Statistics to fulfill the math requirement (Calculus will not be an option to meet this requirement):

Medical Schools Requiring 3 Sem. hrs. Statistics:
The University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio
Texas A&M HSC College of Medicine
Texas Tech University HSC School of Medicine
UNT HSC – Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine

The Statistics course should be taught in a Math or Statistics Department. Individual medical schools may consider statistics courses taught in other departments on an individual basis with appropriate documentation from faculty.

Refer to the Approved Statistics Courses List for a complete list. To seek approval for any course not on the list, submit a course syllabus, course listing and course description to TMDSAS for review."

Whether your med schools require it or not, stats is a good class to take ANYWAY. It will serve you well in life.

There are certain classes that just help you think, process, understand info better. Stats is one of those classes. Philosophy Deductive Logic is another (everyone, EVERYONE, should take deductive logic!!!
